COLLEGE ADMISSIONS TESTING PSAT (includes NMSQT for 11 th grade) SAT ACT SAT Subject Tests Advanced Placement Exams (APs)

PSAT/NMSQT Weds October 19 th - RHS test administration Tests Evidenced Based Reading & Writing and Math Results available in late January 11 Th grade scores used to determine National Merit Scholarship eligibility- NMSQT Test with Accommodations at RHS? You must apply to test with accommodations with Collegeboard and be approved. Accommodations application Deadline- early August 2016

SAT FORMAT 3 hours (+50 minutes for Essay [optional]) – Evidence-Based Reading and Writing Reading Test Writing and Language Test – Math – Essay (optional) Optional and given at the end of the SAT; postsecondary institutions determine whether they will require the Essay for admission 50 minutes to write the essay Tests reading, analysis, and writing skills; students produce a written analysis of a provided source text

SAT SCORING – Scale ranging from 400 to to 800 for Evidence-Based Reading and Writing 200 to 800 for Math Essay 2 to 8 on each of three traits for Essay (reading, analysis, and writing skills) – Essay results reported separately

SAT Cost: $43.00 or $54.50 w/optional essay 7 test dates/year (RHS is a test center for all but November) Fee waivers for eligible students with financial need Register online at CollegeBoard.org

KHAN ACADEMY Khan Academy and CollegeBoard Partnership Free, high quality test-preparation and resources to all students Will give practice tests and score them Personalized practice based on student needs

ACT FORMAT Four separate sections ranging from minutes Reading, English, Math, Scientific Reasoning Each content area is completed before moving on to the next 30 minute optional essay section at end of test SCORING Each subtest scored 1-36 Composite score also 1-36 (not a strict average of the four sections) Essay also scored 1-36 but NOT included in the composite score

ACT Cost:ACT (No Writing): $36.50 ACT Plus Writing: $ test dates/year RHS is not a test center for any date Fee waivers for eligible students with eligible financial need Register online at

TEST OPTIONAL Some colleges and universities do not require SAT/ACT for admission More than 800 four-year colleges and universities do not use the SAT or ACT….. that number is growing! Some schools may only use SAT/ACT for placement and/or academic advising, not for admission A list of these schools can be found on

SUBJECT TESTS SUBJECT tests are hour-long, content- based tests that allow you to showcase achievement in specific subject areas where you excel. It is recommended that you take a SUBJECT test after completing the highest level course in that subject. Not all, in fact most colleges do not require SUBJECT tests. You can take up to 3 SUBJECT tests on any test day. You can not take SAT and SUBJECT tests on the same day. $26 registration fee and 1 test, + $18 for additional tests on the same day. AP EXAMS If you enroll in an AP course at RHS you must take the corresponding AP exam Exams are given on set dates in May All AP exams are given at RHS In some situations RHS will allow students to take an AP exam for a course not offered at RHS. Testers register in October at RHS **AP Exams are NOT a requirement for college admission, but students have the option to self-report scores to colleges**

NCAA Students who aspire to be college athletes should think about the following things: Core Classes to meet NCAA eligibility requirements College coaches may ask students to take standardized tests early for screening purposes Prospective student athletes should register with the NCAA Eligibility Center by the end of junior year NCAA requires an official transcript from RHS. Students can request this through Naviance

CAREER PLANNING- “DO WHAT YOU ARE” Completed in fall of sophomore year Based on the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Extroverted (E) vs. Introverted (I) Intuition (N) vs. Sensing (S) Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F) Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P) Each student is assigned a 4-letter type and given a personality overview and suggestions of potential career paths

CAREER PLANNING – CAREER INTEREST INVENTORY Completed spring of sophomore year Based on the work of John Holland, who divided careers into six clusters based on personality type: RealisticInvestigative ArtisticSocial ConventionalEnterprising The inventory rates student interest in the six categories and matches potential careers with top- rated clusters
