Power Point: 4 Alphabet Lists Starter Lists Essential Word Lists

The major study that Spell-Write was based on ensures that the lists contain the words children most often use when writing. Mastery of the technique of using an alphabetically arrange spelling list will provide skills for the efficient use of dictionary and other reference sources. Students can use these lists to find the correct spelling of a word when writing. Each word has an audio file with common NZ pronunciation.

An information box provides teachers with additional information about this section. i

The words online are from the original book.

Some students and beginner writers find The Alphabet lists too long. The Starter Lists are for these students. The main advantage is brevity. The Starter Lists has two parts: Part 1) 1, 2 and 3 are the basic sight words aligned to the beginning reading levels. Part 2) Alphabetically arranged lists for students who find the main Alphabet List too difficult. Each word in the Starter Lists have an audio file with NZ pronunciation to support the student in their search for the word they need to write.

The Essential Lists

This is a separate section listing the high- frequency words used most often in most forms of written and spoken English. Although it is preferable to learn to use and spell these words in the context of writing, some children will benefit from direct teaching. For most children the later part of the fourth year of school is recommended. But the focus should remain on the acquisition of the Essential List Words as part of writing.

arranged by frequency of use not order of difficulty. The Essential Lists are...

My Students 1. Analyse student’s work. 2. Decide which skills and words to focus on. 3. Give priority to any word that they have difficulty with in their written work that also in the Essential Lists and the associated skills. Lisa’s Work

The emphasis should be on children acquiring the spelling of these words as part of the process of learning to write. Learning on a need to know basis has the greatest power and impact because it gives learning purpose.

Feedback of thoughts, experiences and comments for a Spell-Write Online Community.
