Grid Managers Want to Manage Deviations From Forecasted Energy Source: MSLDC / CES Ministry of Power and Central Energy Agency Taskforce has already evaluated possible role of energy storage for enabling renewable integration and has proposed multiple MW scale demonstration projects. Regulations mandating wind scheduling are currently being introduced creating an opportunity for storage for wind firming and smoothing applications.

Energy Storage for renewable Smoothing

Grid Balancing Services IESA is leading efforts for promotion of the ancillary services market by actively engaging policy makers, central electricity authority and other key stakeholders. Last year IESA released a report outlining the roadmap for adoption of EES for grid frequency regulation. Consumers have no ability to resolve the grid frequency on their own. In a synchronized grid this has to be managed by grid operators. India can address a significant part of the frequency issues by allocation of GW of flexible resources hydro, gas based generation and EES.

Examples of renewable and storage integration

India: Fast growing market for off grid systems According to a recent survey by USAID / CEEW, there are currently over 250 companies working on providing off grid solutions to consumers in India.

Microgrid Initiative for Campus & Rural Opportunities (MICRO) MICRO has set up goal of reducing cost of electricity from microgrids by 30-50% with in next 3 years.

Smart Townships and Cities 16 Indian Government is working on developing 100 Smart Cities. Over 300 Ultra Modern Townships with 5 – 50 MW of peak demand could drive need for storage in India.

Energy Storage Policies & Initiatives 17 National Energy Storage Mission National Smart Grid Mission National Mission for Energy Access National Electric Mobility Mission National Solar & Wind Mission MNRE has set target of 100 GW Solar and 60 GW wind deployment by Include over 20 Ultra Mega Solar parks of 1 GW+ capacity Providing 24* 7 energy access to every citizen by 2019 Deploying 6 Million EV / HEVs by 2020 UDAY- DISCOM Reform Plan

MNRE Proposed Energy Storage Mission Plan PGCIL is working on 3 MW scale demonstration projects SECI has issued tender for 2.5 MW wind – solar hybrid with 1 MWh storage and is working on another 100 MW RFP MNRE has received 40+ applications for demonstration projects under EOI

IESA Working Groups As part of IESA activities we have established three working groups for free exchange of ideas between the various stakeholders. Meetings are organized on a bi- monthly basis where manufacturers can freely discuss about the obstacles they are facing on the policy and propose possible avenues for accelerating the growth. On the technological front IESA is leading efforts for knowledge transfer in the area of energy storage recycling, standards and testing. Proposed accelerator will enable researchers to leverage this entire network for rapid commercialization of their innovations in storage. IESA Policy Energy storage Roadmap for India Ancillary Service Market Development MNRE EoI on Energy storage Project MNRE Standing Committee on Energy Storage an EV/HEV IESA-India Policy Update bulletin for Members Business Access to Funding for start ups in Energy storage domain Financial Due- diligence Support in Project financing Technolog y Accelerator Microgrids E–vehicles Standards and Testing Recycling IESA is leading efforts for establishing a living network of key members on the Policy, Business and Technology front for achieving fast growth in the energy sector.

Energy Storage Potential by Segments by 2022

Conclusion India presents a huge market for Solar & advanced energy storage solutions Around the globe Solar and Storage is turning out as the wining combination for behind the meter applciations. Current annual market for Lead Acid batteries is ~$3.5 Billion which does not address some of the new market opportunities India also presents excellent opportunity for collaborations for R&D, manufacturing and exports Indian policy makers are keen on encouraging energy storage technologies given the challenges faced IESA is your gateway to Indian Market for understanding opportunities, regulations, finding partners and staying informed on opportunities. 21
