Article of the Week I.C.E.

Grading for Second Trimester Articles now worth 40 points. Points off for: incorrect spelling, not starting sentences with a capital letter, not demonstrating active reading andnot using ICE. Still -1 point for being one day late; 60% offof earned grade if turned in late beyond one day. No late articles accepted once a new one isassigned.

Many people may question the existence of bias on our American society, but there are proven ways to measure its existence and its economic impact. According to Sendhil Mullainathan in the article “Racial Bias, Even When We Have Good Intentions” states that there is an “impressive body of research spanning decades…and leads to some uncomfortable conclusions…”(1). Evidently this body of research would prove the existence of bias in our society. Numerous studies are listed, one of the more impactful ones was on race and employment. A 2009 Harvard study had a “sobering finding …that African -American applicants with no criminal record were offered jobs at a rate as low as white applicants who had criminal records” (3). Clearly this shows a measurable bias in how people are hired. Economic impact goes beyond the ability to get hired, “Even eBay auctions were not immune. When iPods were auctioned on eBay, researchers randomly varied the skin color on the hand holding the iPod. A white hand holding the iPod received 21 percent more offers than a black hand” (4). This is significant because we live in a society where everything is supposed to be equal. Thus, the twenty-plus studies referenced in this article do highlight the existence of bias in our American society, and the economic effects it has on individual people.

Clear and narrow topic/thesis sentence. More specific it is, the easier it is to find your supporting details and to stay focused. Many people may question the existence of bias on our American society, but there are proven ways to measure its existence and its economic impact.

Use an introductory phrase to introduce your quote. If author’s name is used in your introduction (preferred) then you don’t need the name in your citation. Only need to do once. According to Sendhil Mullainathan in the article “Racial Bias, Even When We Have Good Intentions” states that there is an “impressive body of research spanning decades…and leads to some uncomfortable conclusions…”(1).

Quotation marks come before citation. If author’s name is already used, then just the page number. Sentence punctuation comes after your citation. an “impressive body of research spanning decades…and leads to some uncomfortable conclusions…”(1).

Explains the quote and ties back into the thesis Many people may question the existence of bias on our American society, but there are proven ways to measure its existence and its economic impact which keeps your writing focused. Then include a transition leading your reader to the next quote. Clearly this shows a measurable bias in how people are hired. Economic impact goes beyond the ability to get hired

All one big happy sentence! 1.(Sentence #3 using E of ICE) Write a sentence explaining your quote. Think: why did you choose this quote? How/why does it relate to your topic sentence? What does it show/prove? Start your explanation sentence with one of the words/phrases on your handout. 1.Repeat: (Sentence #’s 4-7 using C then E of ICE) citation (after quote) and your explanation. 1.End with a concluding statement which ties back in with your topic/thesis sentence. 1.Write your topic/thesis sentence.
