New Orleans Leukemia Cup Regatta Success Story Guy Brierre Katie Triplett
Louisiana Tip #1 Approach Sponsorship of the event like you would with the Light the Night Campaign We had a brainstorming session with a separate sponsorship committee (similar to an Executive Committee) and build a strong list of people to contact for sponsorship. We set a personal goal of $50K and ended up raising over $70,000 in sponsorship alone. Last year, we raised $16K in sponsorship, so don’t be discouraged if $70K sounds like a big number.
Louisiana Tip #2 Have a strong leader within the yacht club Ask the yacht club manager who the big personalities are. –This doesn’t have to be the Commodore. –It needs to be someone who is a positive influence within the club. Look at the entertainment committees, board of trustees, sailing director, house committee and get them involved. –Also ask if there is a personal connection within the club.
Louisiana Tip #3 Plan the post race party as a stand alone event. We invited everyone to our Saturday evening party, including sponsors and LLS board members. The non-sailors, enjoyed being at the yacht club and the sailors enjoyed the large crowd. Typically we’ve had people. This year, we had 500 people attend, which meant more people bidding at the auction. Anyone who raised $50 or more received a FREE party ticket. We also sold tickets online through DoJiggy ($50/single, $75/couple, $300/table. We sold close nearly 30 tables. We plan to keep the price points the same for next year. You will really need the support from the yacht club and their staff to make the party a stand alone event.
