Overview of Google Fiber Provided services History of project Comparisons with current internet speeds Pros and cons Conclusion

Project to build an experimental broadband internet infrastructure using fiber-optic communication Boasts internet speeds up to 100 times faster than current broadband connections throughout the US Over 1,100 communities nationwide applied to be the first to get and test the service Google announced on March 30, 2011 that the sister cities of Kansas City, Kansas and Kansas City, Missouri would be the first

Method of transmitting information from one place to another by sending pulses of light through an optical fiber The light forms an electromagnetic carrier wave that is modified to carry information First developed in the 1970’s Much faster and more efficient than copper wire communication

Has revolutionized the telecommunications industry Played a major role in the advent of the Information Age Due to its advantages over electrical transmission, optical fibers have largely replaced copper wire communications in core networks

Fiber offers customers three options Free 5 Mbps internet access 1 Gbps internet access for $70 a month Version that includes 1 Gbps internet access and HD television service for $120 a month The internet service includes 1 terabyte of cloud storage HDTV and internet bundle also includes 2 terabytes of DVR storage

Though the 5 Mbps internet access will be free, it will cost users a one time $300 construction fee Can pay an installment of $25 a month for 1 year Only the free 5 Mbps standard connection will require the construction fee The 1 Gbps service and television service have the construction fee waived The free service will continue for at least the next 7 years according to Google, while schools will get free 1 Gbps connectivity

Announced in 2010 Held an application process to determine test city Google chose the Kansas City area for two main reasons: They were impressed with the speed that the cities responded to the applications for selection The city has a disused network of water mains, owned by the city, which allows fiber cables to be distributed throughout the network of pipes causing minimal disruption during the installation process

Google’s officials stressed how the Web has changed virtually everything “for the good” over the last few years and created million of jobs Despite this, Google says we are at a “crossroads” when it comes to internet speed While we currently have a lot of computing power and storage capacity, internet speeds in the US continue to lag behind other countries

The average speed in the US today is 5.8 Mbps according to Akamai’s State of the Internet 4Q2011, a quarterly “State of the Internet” report. Includes data gathered across Akamai's global server network about attack traffic, average & maximum connection speeds, Internet penetration and broadband adaptation. Fiber offers speeds up to 100 times faster.

ISP’s will be forced to react Competition is good for consumers Cable companies will have to switch things up or fall behind Comcast’s premium internet connection offers downloads of up to 50 Mbps for $100 dollars a month, with no television service included ISPs will be forced to offer faster speeds for cheaper, which is good news for consumers

No bandwidth cap Services such as Comcast don’t count streaming from it’s own streaming video service against bandwidth caps, though everything else does count Google Fiber has no caps whatsoever

Ample amount of storage The DVR box that comes with Google Fiber contains 2TB storage Lets users record up to eight shows at one time Users who opt for the internet only package get 1 TB cloud storage This means a user’s every digital asset can be accessible from any Internet-connected device or computer whenever he or she needs it.

TV service lacks big name channels ESPN HBO Disney AMC TBS Potential turn off for customers considering TV package

Don’t expect it anytime soon Google will announce a list of upcoming cities based on number of households that have applied Even those won’t be rolling till at least mid 2013 No telling when rest of world will have access
