Summer English Programs 2011

Our summer programs Thanks for letting International Language Institute provide this summer English program proposal. ILI is one of Canada’s oldest and most respected English language schools. Since 1983 we helped thousands of students and professionals improve their English, prepare for university, advance their careers, write IELTS exams and experience Canada. We’ve collected some pictures showing how previous groups enjoyed ILI and our social activities. We hope they illustrate the experience you can expect when you choose ILI. I look forward to working with you to customize the the program to the needs of your students. Chris Musial, Marketing Director

Where is ILI? Halifax is Canada's oldest English-speaking city. With a population of 400,000, it’s the largest Canadian city east of Montréal and is less than two hours by air from Toronto, Montréal, Ottawa, New York, and Boston. Halifax has an exciting port and downtown districts which host many festivals, concerts, conferences, and tourists all year long. With five universities and colleges, over 35,000 students, a centre for hospitals, government, and financial institutions Halifax is the right size to offer students an environment where they can perfect their English.

Halifax Airport (YHZ) Getting to Halifax is easy! The Halifax Stanfield International Airport ( handles over 650 flights per week including new terminals that offer United States Customs and Pre-Clearance services ensuring smooth connections through US airports. The Halifax Airport offers direct flights from Getting here is easy U.S. Cities New York JFK (JFK) LaGuardia (LGA) Newark (EWR) Boston (BOS) Washington DC (DCA) Chicago (ORD) Detroit (DET) European Cities London (LHR) Frankfurt (FRA) Canadian Cities Toronto (YYZ) Montréal (YUL) Ottawa (YOW)

ILI campus ILI Location The ILI campus occupies over 14,000 square feet of ground floor space at the Bayers Road Shopping and & Business Complex. ILI Campus The ILI campus has a central courtyard fountain surrounded by bright classrooms,a self-study centre with 16 computers, free Internet, a kitchen, a Lounge containing a TV and a Ping Pong table, and access to photocopier, fax, And international calling service.

Placement Testing When your students arrive at ILI, they will take written and spoken placement tests and join an appropriate class in one of the following seven levels: Level 1: Beginner Level 2: Pre-Intermediate Level 3: Intermediate Level 4: Upper-Intermediate Level 5: First Certificate Level 6: Advanced Level 7: Proficiency Program Forma ILI's program provides your students with 15 hours of English instruction in the morning and a full schedule of activities in the afternoon.

Placement testing Presentation and Practice The morning classes form the core of the program and have a balanced approach to the four basic language skills; reading, writing, listening, and speaking. In these sessions ILI teachers will present formal language classes and provide opportunities to practice in a controlled and supportive environment. Natural Conversation In the afternoons, students develop practical language skills by using English in real life situations. A complete activity schedule will take students out of the classroom to participate in exciting Canadian cultural events. Practicing English in an English-speaking country is the best way to develop naturally spoken English conversation. Informal Help Following morning classes, your students can get help from a teacher, browse the Internet, or use books, computers, or audiotapes in ILI's Self-Study Centre.

Chaperons The chaperons you send to accompany the group play an important and well defined role. Striking the right balance between supporting the students and the ILI staff is an important factor in the success of the program. To help with the program preparation, we recommend that you clearly identify roles for the chaperons by choosing from the following three options. Option 1 If the chaperons are English teachers, they can attend a CELTA teacher-training course in the mornings as observers and participate in the social activities with the students in the afternoons. This option is provided at no additional cost to your group or your chaperons. Option 2 Similarly, the chaperons can attend any of our regular ongoing English classes, at any level that suits them. The chaperons will be provided with a certificate of attendance. This option is provided at no additional cost to your group or your chaperons.

Chaperons Option 3 Another option is for your chaperons to attend a customized ILI program during the mornings that can combine language learning and teacher training modules. ILI will provide your participants with an official certificate for this course at the end of the study period. Pricing for this course can be discussed separately. CELTA at ILI ILI was the first organization to offer CELTA teacher training in North America. ILI now provides this world-recognized program through its sister institute English Canada World Organization (EC). For more information on CELTA or EC please visit

Social Activities ILI provides exciting social activities unique to eastern Canada during afternoons and weekends. Your students will attend concerts, theatre, museums, festivals, and sporting events. ILI will supervise trips to go sailing, horseback riding, touring local farms, and traveling on sightseeing trips to local points of interest. ILI host families also invite students to join family activities, allowing students to experience Canadian culture and traditions in a friendly environment. Choosing ILI will provide your students with a language experience they will never forget.

Social activities Activities Selection A sample tentative schedule of the activities is provided for your review. ILI staff look forward to helping you choose the Activities that are of the most interest to your students. Activities Fees The fees for social activities are included in the program cost.
