Types of Local Governments ► Counties: largest subdivision of a state. All states but DE have these. ► NC has 100 counties. Currituck County is one of the oldest counties in NC. County Government ► Each is governed by a Board of Commissioners (BOC). This is the legislature. ► The BOC hires a County Manager as the county’s chief executive. This position is a professional who specializes in government management.
Board of Commissioners ► There are seven members on the BOC in Currituck County. ► 5 from the districts and 2 at-large members. 5 from the districts ► Main duties are: Make ordinances, levy taxes, hire county manager and personnel, and approve the manager’s budget.

Special Districts ► Special District: Concentrate on regulation and control of 1 area. ► These local districts oversee a specific area of concern in a county. ► Examples in Currituck County include our school district and our soil & water district. ► Each district is governed by an elected board. ► The Currituck County School district is run daily by our superintendent.

BOE Townships
Superintendent ► Hired by the BOE. ► Makes the budget, oversees all personnel, carries out school operations and policies. ► Today is Dr. Mark Stefanick is Currituck Co.’s Superintendent.
Sherriff ► Oversee criminal law enforcement and their officers (deputies) within the county. ► Elected in every county to 4-year terms. ► Cannot be a convicted felon. ► Our Sherriff is Susan Johnson.
