Parts of a Map Learning Target : Understand the various parts of a map by labeling and completing an exit slip.

Title ► Simply and clearly states the map’s purpose.

T&T - W hat are the titles of these maps?

Political & Physical T & T – What differences do you notice between the two maps? Political Maps show boundaries Physical Maps show geographic features

Thematic or Special Purpose These maps are meant to show a specific subject or theme.

Compass ► Shows the reader direction for the map. ► A compass rose shows the cardinal directions of north, east, south, and west.

Map Key / Legend ► Tells the reader what each symbol or color represents ► Symbols stand for various objects on a map. Capital City

Map Key Examples

Scale ► Mapmakers draw things smaller than they really are. ► To make the map accurate by showing how actual size compares to the drawn size

Scale examples ► Scales are used on maps to measure distance.

Latitude Lines running parallel to the equator. They are measured in in degrees north or south of the equator.

Longitude Lines running pole to pole parallel to the Prime Meridian. They are measured in in degrees east or west of the Prime Meridian.
