Civil Rights By 5th Grade Sandburg PACE

Coretta Scott King She was Martin Luther King Jr.’s wife. She had an award named after her (The Coretta Scott King award), which gives awards to African-American authors. She got awards from more than 30 colleges.

Coretta Scott King Coretta sang in concerts to raise money for Civil Rights. She started the King Center so people would know about Martin Luther King Jr. She worked for Civil Rights.

Gabby Douglas Gabby won 2 gold medals at the 2012 Olympics. She won team gold and all-around gold. Gabby trained with Liang Chow. She moved 2,000 miles from home to train with Liang Chow. She was very poor. (Her family lived in a car for a couple months.)

Impact on Civil Rights Gabby was the first African American gymnast to win the All Around. She proved that everyone has potential to win no matter what race you are. She encouraged a lot of African American children to start gymnastics.

Rosa Parks ➢ She was married to Raymond Parks. ➢ Rosa was a Civil Rights activist. ➢ When she was asked to give up her seat on a bus she refused and was arrested. ➢ She was a seamstress.

Rosa Parks (cont.) When she refused to give up her seat, people started to take a stand and to join NAACP. She had a great impact on Civil Rights.

Thurgood Marshall Thurgood Marshall was the first African American Supreme Court justice. ●He fought for the civil rights movement and was in the NAACP.

How Thurgood Marshall Affected the Civil Rights Movement He helped integrate schools. He relieved forced charges against African Americans unjustly charged. He brought equality between black and white people in court.

Michael Jordan Michael Jordan was born on February 17, Michael Grew up in Wilmington, North Carolina. He had 5 siblings: Deloris, Larry, Roslyn, James and Jordan Jr. He entered University Of Carolina in Michael was the second person to ever to make 3,000 points in a season.

Michael Jordan He earned most valuable player award 5 times. M.J. bought a share of the Charlotte Bobcats. He also played for the Washington Wizards. Michael made the Olympic basketball team and brought home the gold. Jordan divorced his wife, Juanita Vanoy. He has 3 children: Jeff, Marcus, and Jasmine.

Barack Obama Obama was born on August 4, He was raised by his mother and his grandparents helped. Barack means ‘One who is blessed’ in Swahili. When Barack was 21, his dad was in a car accident. He lost both his legs. In another car accident, Barack Obama Sr. was killed. He attended law school at the Harvard Law Review.

Barack Obama Obama gave a speech called ‘A More Perfect Union’ that was on civil racial rights. He was the first African American State Senator and President of the United States. His Vice President is Joe Biden.

Wilma Rudolph, Major Accomplishments ●Wilma overcame polio at age 12. ●She went to college; she was the first person to go to college in her family. ●She went to the Olympics twice, in 1956 and ●She was the first woman to win three gold medals in one Olympics.

Civil Rights Achievements ●Wilma started the Wilma Rudolph foundation. ●She used the charity to support young African American athletes. ●She traveled around the world to do this.

Martin Luther King, Jr. He was a very good public speaker. Martin skipped 9th and 12th grade since he was so smart. He was a preacher. His house was bombed and his brother’s house was bombed.

Civil Rights Achievements He was picked to be the leader of the Civil Rights movement. He gave African Americans more rights. He was assassinated in 1968, but his legacy lives on.
