July 2008 Construction is underway on TDS’ fiber-optic network in Monticello, Minn.
The first dig, July 10, 2008.
Digging begins – the directional drilling machine (above) bores holes where the fiber-optics will soon be laid.
With the directional drill in the ground, this Telcom Construction employee uses the “Digitrack” (just in front of the orange stake) to help steer and track the drill head.
Members of the construction crew measure the depth of existing facilities (cable, water, gas, etc.) to avoid interrupting current services while digging.
This reel of Innerduct will soon be inserted into the holes made by the directional drilling machine; the fiber will then be inserted through it.
Employees peel the Innerduct off the reel, readying it for insertion into the ground.
This worker check his list, confirming construction is progressing according to plan.
In the background, crews work on excavating new holes; in the foreground, existing utilities are flagged and cones mark where holes have been dug.
On-site, Dave Wittwer, president and CEO of TDS Telecom, meets with the construction team, July 21, 2008.
