Highway Transportation System  Three parts:  Roadway Users  Vehicles  Roadways  HTS is the most complex system because it has the greatest variety of users.  With a partner develop a list of five behaviors or situations that might increase the risk for collisions for each part of the HTS. “Think Pair Share”  Vocabulary Vocabulary

Regulating the HTS  Federal, state, and local government agencies work together to regulate the HTS.  Two laws have been passed to set standards.  National Highway Safety Act & National Traffic and Motor vehicle Safety Act  National Highway Safety Act  Guidelines for states requiring registration, licensing, traffic court & highway maintenance.  National Traffic and Motor vehicle Safety Act  Require automakers to install safety features, i.e. Seatbelts.

Your Driving Task  Includes mental, social, and physical skills. You must be able to develop low risk driving habits.  Mental Skills  Driving is primarily a thinking task.  Expect that other drivers will make mistakes  Use IPDE process effectively  Social Skills  Being courteous  Using non- verbal communication  Remaining calm & patient  Physical Skills  Hand-eye coordination  Using braking and steering controls  Scanning What are some examples of social skills used while driving?

Applying the SIPDE Process  Scanning/Searching  I- Identify important information in the current driving situation  P- when and where possible conflicts will occur.  D- Decide when, where, and how to communicate, adjust speeds, and/or change positions.  E- Execute the correct action. Organized system for seeing, thinking and responding during the driving task. Zone Control System: method to manage space around the car. Smith System: 5 key steps to help avoid collisions Both Systems: helps you to practice low risk driving skills.

Driving Responsibilities Legal: Laws & Collisions You are responsible to obey the laws governed by the state of NJ  Financial :  Operating Cost  Fuel, oil & maintenance  Fixed Costs  Purchase price insurance, fees.  Crash Costs  Driver error is the most common cause for collisions Environmental: Avoid polluting the air & water, and preventing chemical spills by being fuel efficient, carpooling & recycling.  Self & Others:  Making Rational Decisions  Show respect for yourself & others.  Practice common courtesy & good judgment.  SAYING NO TO HARMFUL BEHAVIORS!

Graduated Driver’s Licensing Program  Requires:  Licensing in stages  Driving time restrictions  Passenger limitations  Driver Ed. program is a start toward becoming a responsible driver. It also alerts you to possible driving hazards. When obtaining a license: -you can become an Organ Donor, which should be discussed with family members first. -You are also giving implied consent to law enforcement workers.
