WHAT IS A CURRICULUM VITAE?  not just a list of facts  a resume of your personal, educational and career history  an indication of your own strengths and achievements  when applying for a job, one way way of getting noticed among a number of other candidates

CURRICULUM VITAE – TIPS TO REMEMBER PRESENTATION  Always type your CV.  Use good quality paper (not a photocopy).  A photo may be relevant.  Include a COVERING LETTER, explaining why you’re applying for a job.  Don’t fax a CV. It’s a confidential document. CONTENT  Keep it short (one page if possible), simple and clear.  Organise it by using HEADINGS.  If applying for a job where your academic record is important, list qualifications and grades.  Start with your more recent job, and work backwards.

 Don’t use too much work jargon, EXPLAIN ANY JOB TITLES that are ambiguous.  RESEARCH EMPLOYERS you intend to apply to – you can’t write an effective CV unless you know about the employer and the job.  Give most detail to skills, interests and activities that match their requirements.  Don’t include irrelevant details or failures.  Start with ‘STRONG VERBS’ (e.g. not ‘Spent the summer working...’ but ‘Worked...’)  Be SPECIFIC (i.e. avoid general phrases, such as ‘I’m an excellent team worker.’) and give examples.  Use REFEREES who can show that you possess the particular qualities required for the job or scholarship.  Check your spelling!

BETWEEN THE LINES  Don’t hide any vital information, like your age.  If you spent a year travelling or doing nothing, say so. Years on a CV that are anaccounted for will seem suspicious.  Don’t mention reasons for leaving your present job.  Never lie.  Don’t include your salary.  Focus on major achievements and demonstrate you are an asset to your present employer.  List a couple of outside interests and skills (languages), especially sports since they show potential for team work.  Keep a copy of your CV and look at it before the interview.

CURRICULUM VITAE - ORGANISATION CURRICULUM VITAE - ORGANISATION PUT THE FOLLOWING HEADINGS IN THE RIGHT ORDER: _____ SPECIAL SKILLS AND COMPETENCES _____ EDUCATION AND TRAINING (OR QUALIFICATIONS) _____ HOBBIES AND INTERESTS _____ WORK EXPERIENCE/PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE _____ REFERENCES _____ PERSONAL DETAILS/PERSONAL INFORMATION

Copy the following pieces of information under the right headings.  list of institutions and schools, as well as degrees or diplomas you obtained from those institutions including the relevant dates  first name and surname, address, telephone, fax and , date of birth, gender, marital status, nationality  hobbies, interests and activities relevant to the job you are seeking; travel and cultural experience

 languages (indicate level of proficiency), computer skills (word processing, programs, Internet) driving licence, organisational, artistic, technical or any other relevant skills  the names and addresses of two referees (ideally, one academic and one work experience referee), including their s or phone numbers (if available), and making their status and relationship to you clear  awards and prizes  employment (for paid work) with dates and name of employer, be specific about your duties and responsibilities (what was done and for how long) or level of skills gained  exam results, titles or topics of dissertations

CURRICULUM VITAE - LAYOUT  Don’t write in f__________ sentences; telegraphese is normal and saves space  H __________ major selling point, e.g. Faculty of Economics, Zagreb University  Highlight h __________ or k __________ words by use of CAPITAL or bold type (italic is a weak typeface: bold italic stands out better)  A __________ underlining  Tabulate d __________ in the left hand column  Give information in r __________ chronological order so that the most r __________ and impressive details come first  If not using c __________ order, arrange work experience and activities in the order that matches importance of e __________ requirements
