 Internal Advantages: ◦ Cheaper ◦ Candidates have inside knowledge of the business ◦ Need short periods of training ◦ Internal promotions act as incentives to others to work harder ◦ Business will already know the candidate ◦ Avoids pitfalls of recruiting a candidate who looks good on paper but fails to deliver

 Internal Disadvantages: ◦ Creates another vacancy within the business ◦ Can cause jealousy ◦ No introduction of fresh ideas into the business

 External: ◦ Can introduce vital new ideas which lead to positive improvements ◦ Widens the talent pool of available candidates  BUT: ◦ Is more expensive and time consuming ◦ Could lead to someone who looks good on paper but is not so good in practice being recruited Question – What are the different methods a business can use to select employees?

In pairs, you have got 4 job adverts in front of you. Draw similarities and differences between the adverts. Discuss and write down the good and bad points of each advert. Can you highlight which adverts are internal and which are external.

 Face to face interviews are most common way of assessing potential candidates:  One to one: a single, senior individual in the organisation gives a unique, personal interview to every candidate. Gives the employer a much better understanding of whether the candidate will fit into the organisation

 Most suitable candidate Is selected; References are followed up and if satisfactory; Job offer is made; Contract is drawn up. Following the interviews:

 12 volunteers.  You will need to go away and create a brief CV and letter of application towards the role of ‘Best Business Studies Student’  The rest of you, split into 2 groups, each group will be a interview panel, you should create a series of questions to ask your quota of candidates.
