Ready for a Test Drive? Possible Scenarios for Generating Data Inquiries INDUSTRY RECRUITMENT: My boss wants me to recruit more diverse engineers, but I am not sure how to get statistics and data on minority students in aerospace programs across the country. Can the ASEE Data Mining Tool help me identify schools with diverse aerospace engineering students? 17

Ready for a Test Drive? Possible Scenarios for Generating Data Inquiries INDUSTRY RECRUITMENT: My company is dealing with the recession by drastically reducing the number of colleges and universities from which we recruit our ChE BS engineers. In addition, there is discussion that we should shift to a more regional approach for recruiting. I have been tasked with generating a new recruitment plan. A fellow member on the recruitment team is lobbying hard to keep his alma mater on the targeted school list but I’m not convinced his school produces either the numbers or diversity candidates we need. How can the ASEE Data Mining Tool help me generate a plan that will support my recommendations? 18

Ready for a Test Drive? Possible Scenarios for Generating Data Inquiries INDUSTRY RECRUITMENT: Now that I have a list of schools that I want to recruit diverse students from, what is the best approach to engaging female engineering students on these campuses? 19

Data is data is data… Key Points: – Check and recheck and recheck your data If something looks off to you, double check and ask questions (even data sources make mistakes…) Aerospace Engineering vs. Aerospace Engineering with Information Technology vs. Engineering-Aeronautics and Astronautics – Use clear headings/descriptors and cite your sources Others are not “living” in the data – Be clear about the data limitations Example: if a school reports all graduates as unknown ethnicity, you won’t be able to get their ethnicity breakdown Example: if you are using mapping and have two schools in close proximity, you may not be able to see both – “Charts and tables and graphs, oh, my…” Use to highlight the points you are trying to make Less is often more… 20
