Plant Cell

Organelles An organelle is a part of a cell that has a specific function within the cell to help the cell meet its overall needs.

Nucleus In Plants and animals Function – “control center” directs the cell’s activities Shape of a sphere Contains cell’s genetic material

Nucleolus Description: Small dense center in the nucleus Function: Responsible for making ribosomes Location: Found inside the nucleus

Endoplasmic Reticulum Description: Looks like a ribbon, two types; smooth and rough Function – carry proteins and other materials from one part of the cell to another. Rough ER has ribosomes on it. Location – around the nucleus

Cell Wall In plants only. Location – tough, rigid, outer covering that surrounds the cell membrane of plant cells. Function - Protects and supports the plant

Cell Membrane In plant and animals Location - Outer boundary (after the cell wall) Function - Controls what goes in and out of the cell.

Cytoplasm Description—Jelly-like Fluid within cell that contains organelles Location - between cell membrane and the nucleus Function - helps move things around in cell Made up of about two-thirds water Cellular respiration begins here

Golgi Body Description: Flat pancake-like structures Function- “mail room” where protein molecules are sorted, changed, packaged, and distributed through the cell and outside the cell.

Cell Wall Cytoplasm Nucleus Cell Membrane Golgi Body

Chloroplast Green oval-shaped structures that give plants their green color Function – capture energy from sun to produce food for the cell. (Photosynthesis) Photosynthesi s

Mitochondria Kidney-bean shaped organelle Function – “Powerhouse” because it changes energy stored in food compounds into a useful form of energy. Respiration Fermentation

Vacuole Large water filled structure Function –storage areas of cells Plants have one large central vacuole, animals have multiple smaller ones Store wastes, food and other materials needed by the cells
