What is Marijuana? Marijuana refers to the dried leaves, flowers, stems, and seeds from the hemp plant Cannabis sativa, which contains the psychoactive (mind-altering) chemical delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), as well as other related compounds.

Pharmacology 360 chemicals in a single cannabis plant The most potent psychoactive component is THC. When smoked or ingested is converted by the liver into 60 other metabolites-many of which are ALSO psychoactive. Growing techniques have increased the average concentration of THC in marijuana. CBD can be controlled, used for medicinal purposes

How does Marijuana effect the brain? When marijuana is smoked, THC rapidly passes from the lungs into the bloodstream, which carries the chemical to the brain and other organs throughout the body. THC acts on specific molecular targets on brain cells, called cannabinoid receptors. These brain receptors-impact pleasure, memory, thinking, concentration, time perception, etc.

Physical Effects Relaxation Bloodshot eyes Coughing Increase in appetite Decrease in muscle coordination Increased heart rate Stimulant/depressant

Withdrawal and Tolerance Marijuana remains in the system for months Withdrawal not rapid THC remains in fat cells-withdrawal can take weeks Anger/irritability Aches pains Depression Sleep disturbences sweating
