EGI-InSPIRE RI VT Business Engagement Programme for SMEs SMEs as key drivers for growth Business Engagement Programme −Bringing SMEs into the EGI ecosystem to create mutual value Output: −Definition of a framework for relationship −What can a federated EGI collaboration offer? What is the value for both parts? What would be the forms of engagement? What cannot be done? −Leads: Identification of SMEs potentially interested −Ideally, a few pilot cases and KPIs Tool: a very active VT, dynamic telcos, and homework. 21/05/ EGI CF’14 – Helsinki 21 May 2014

EGI-InSPIRE RI SMEs as key drivers for growth The Small and Medium size Enterprises represent more than the half of the EU economy More than 99% of all European businesses are SMEs Role to play in job creation, growth and innovation −Contributing in many sectors up to 80% of all employment, especially for young people European Commission site 21/05/ EGI CF’14 – Helsinki 21 May 2014

EGI-InSPIRE RI Summary / Conclusions Funding Agencies −Research and tool development for project purposes no longer enough – must demonstrate that what is created has external or persistent value (i.e. societal and economic impact) −Your job is to innovate and produce excellent science, so need to create relationships and partnerships EGI in a unique position to facilitate value chain from research to industry What could be done: −Joint technical development (e.g. user interfaces; data applications) −Pre-commercial prototyping (e.g. SMEs don’t have money to invest in concepts, feasibility tests raise market potential) −Increased visibility/Network effect reaching a wider audience through promotional agreements −Exploitation of scientific data for social/economic value in the EU If there is value generation there are revenue streams = increased exploitation of scientific results −Puts you/us in better positioning for H2020 and national funding 21/05/ EGI CF’14 – Helsinki 21 May 2014

EGI-InSPIRE RI Thank you! 21/05/ Any question? EGI CF’14 – Helsinki 21 May 2014
