GREEN ENTREPRENEURSHIP WHAT?WHY?HOW?

WHAT IS GREEN ENTREPRENEURSHIP? Green Entrepreneurship is an entrepreneurial journey to optimize the returns on Economic, Social and Environmental Capital Invested. Its a process of wealth creation through optimal use of natural or man made resources by ensuring minimization of green house gas emissions and waste generation to reduce air, water and solid waste pollution thereby increasing profitability while enhancing an overall positive impact on humanity.

MAIN DRIVERS OF GREEN ENTREPRENEURSHIP Global Warming Saving Critical Natural Resources Sustainable Enterprise Creation- Increasing Profitability, Sustainably While Creating Abundance For All Creating a Better World For Future Generations (given that the world’s population will grow from current 6 billion to about 9 million by turn of this century which is likely to put additional burden of serving additional humans on this planet)

UNDERSTANDING THE IMPACT OF PROGRESS OVER LAST 100 YEARS If we condense last 2 million years in one year i.e. If 12 Months = Past 2 Million Years Jan 1 st - Stone Age Humans were Hunting Nov 19 th - Humans Discover Fire Dec 29 th – Agriculture and Cities Emerge and Humans Learn to Collaborate with each other Dec 31 st -1 AM: Idea of Science, R&D emerge to put investigative knowledge to human use Dec 31 st – AM Industrial Revolution and Progress but all hell broke loose on environment

GLOBAL WARMING AND HOW HUMANS RUINED THE PLANET In last few minutes of this calendar year humans progressed but at the cost of environment. Some say that we are now at the beginning of the failure of all that we accomplished in the name of success (last 100 years). An era of profound unpredictable change begins. Need creative thinkers to lead the change needed to repair the damage to our environment as we must live in sync for our own survival

3.Minimize Solid Waste Generation and Reduce Costs of Landfills, Create Local Compost Piles from Organic Waste 4.Innovate in the Area of Agriculture to Evolve New Techniques that Minimize Water Usage 5.Restore Forestation 6.Reduce, Reuse and Recycle 7.Increased Recycling- Paper/Glass/ Plastics/ Styrofoam/ Aluminum Cans/ Electronics/ Batteries GLOBAL WARMING AND HOW A GREEN ENTREPRENEUR CAN HELP

8.Develop and Increase Use of Renewable Energy 9.Prevent Underground Water Pollution, Air Pollution and Soil Pollution and Increase Availability of Potable Water 10.Eliminate Usage of Fluorocarbons and Prevent Methane Emissions 11. Produce Energy Efficient Devices 12. Increase Use of Bio-degradable Materials GLOBAL WARMING AND HOW A GREEN ENTREPRENEUR CAN HELP

13. Eliminate Unnecessary Transportation and Travel 14. Adopt Organic and Vertical Farming with use of Renewable Energy Sources 15. Create Awareness in Our Society at All Levels Starting with Family, Community, Corporates etc GLOBAL WARMING AND HOW A GREEN ENTREPRENEUR CAN HELP

SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS - A GREEN ENTREPRENEUR’S DEFINITION A sustainable business has those policies and processes which enhance the financial, environmental, societal, human and other resources on which the company involved depends for its long-term health. Sustainability is the result of having such sustainable policies and processes, and aligning them so that goals in one area are not com- promised in favor of those in another.

LIFECYCLE ANALYSIS APPROACH A complete lifecycle analysis of a product would include three components: Lifecycle Inventory — a measure of energy and raw material use, air emissions, water pollution and solid waste generated; Lifecycle Impact Assessment — an evaluation of the likely environmental and human health effects of the inventory; and Lifecycle Improvement Analysis — a report on opportunities to reduce or eliminate environmental impact across the lifecycle.

BATHROOM Electric hand dryers or cloth towel rack –Replaces paper towels –Otherwise, have paper recycle bin near exit Low flow/waterless toilets Motion detector on faucets –Prevents water from being left on Report water leaks right away!

COMPUTERS Enable screen savers on monitors –Increases security, and saves electricity Shut down equipment when not in use –Machinery, computers, printers, fax machines, copiers –Measure actual electricity usage of equipment (focus on those that heat and cool!) Choose laptops over desktops –Use less electricity, less packaging and raw materials

OFFICE SUPPLIES Buy recycled products –Binders, desks, chairs, pens, file cabinets, etc Buy rewriteable CDs and DVDs (reuse) Create organized central area for supplies –Clean out desks regularly to put back into storage, take only what you need to reduce purchases –Ask around before you buy new
