Energy Conservation Building Upgrades Alma School District

Scope Upgrade the existing heating and ventilation equipment within the school that is over 60 years old and in poor condition. Potential energy and operational savings in a new HVAC system. Improve the ventilation and comfort within the building and an option for adding air conditioning. Full energy conservation and facility study available in District Office ALMA AREA SCHOOLS2

Conditions Summary – Existing Systems Steam Boilers Operate on fuel oil Well past life expectancy Steam heat requires 230 degree water Less than 60% efficient High maintenance cost Piping and traps in poor shape Controls in poor condition or not working Pneumatics are becoming obsolete Parts are difficult to find Service technicians no longer being trained ALMA AREA SCHOOLS3

Conditions Summary – Existing Systems Lighting 114 Older T-12 fixtures that are inefficient 16 Older inefficient Metal Halide lights in gyms Electrical Service Is at maximum capacity ALMA AREA SCHOOLS4

Conditions Summary – Existing Systems Windows (older) Single pane Poor shape No thermal insulation Unit Ventilators in Classrooms Well beyond their “useful life” Poor condition and do not meet ventilation needs Controls not working ALMA AREA SCHOOLS5

Option #1 High Efficiency Boiler New high efficient hot water boilers operating on LP gas New pumps with variable frequency drives New piping New classroom ventilation units Classroom windows replaced (31) Upgraded digital temperature controls Electrical service upgrade Replace (114) T-12 lighting fixtures with new T-8 Replace (16) Metal Halide gym lights with new T-8 Install motion sensors for on/off Replace exterior building lights ALMA AREA SCHOOLS6

Option #2 Geothermal Geothermal Heating & Cooling Solar panels for well field balance and heating supplement New classroom units for heating and air conditioning Classroom windows replaced (31) Upgraded digital temperature controls Electrical service upgrade Replace (114)T-12 lighting fixtures with new T-8 Replace (16) Metal Halide gym lights with new T-8 Install motion sensors for on/off Replace exterior building lights ALMA AREA SCHOOLS7

Options – Cost & Savings #1 - High Efficiency Boiler Preliminary Cost - $1,640, Engineering/Project Management/State Plans/Permits etc. - $160, Total project cost - $1,800, Estimated Energy and Operational Savings - $58,500/year ALMA AREA SCHOOLS8 #2 – Geothermal Preliminary Cost - $2,590,000 Engineering/Project Management/State Plans/Permits etc. - $260, Total project cost - $2,850, Estimated Energy and Operational Savings - $99,500/year Building would be air conditioned

Concept Options – Pro Forma Estimate Energy Study - ALMA AREA SCHOOLS9 High Efficient Boiler Option
