Starter  Think about the characteristics of the CBD (think of Glasgow).  What type of things would you expect to see on a map of Glasgow’s CBD?  Discuss with the person next to you and write down your answers. (4 minutes)

Grid iron street pattern Bus station Train station Many churches and places of worship Tourist information point. Major transport routes

Task 1: Map characteristics  Look at the land out you have been given of different land use zones from a map of Glasgow.  Annotate around the maps with all of the information that you can come up with.

THE CBD  Grid Iron street pattern  Train & Bus stations  Lots of churches  Tourist Information  Routes converge  High building density  Tourist information point.

19 th Century Industry & Housing

 Large, irregular shaped buildings  Tenements nearby with grid iron pattern  Little open space  Lots of transport links  Close to river and railway/canal  Much of this area will have seen significant change in recent years

The Inner Suburbs

 Cul-de-sacs and crescents  More open space  Examples of recreation e.g golf courses  Less main roads so it is quieter

The Outer Suburbs

 Edge of town location  Irregular street pattern  Lots of open space  Few transport links or services.  Low building density – room for gardens and garages.

New Industrial Estate

 Edge of town location  Smaller, regular shaped buildings  Open space  Landscaping  Good road links
