4TH BIOECONOMY STAKEHOLDERS’ CONFERENCE CATIA BASTIOLI UTRECHT, 12TH APRIL 2016

BIOECONOMY IS A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO RICONNECT ECONOMY AND SOCIETY

proprietary technologies Local areas PARTNERSHIP with other sectors to create new value chains - job opportunities - new products – new projects – new solutions for new development models, BIOECONOMY MUST BE PART OF THE EU’s INDUSTRIAL STRATEGY Converting decommissioned industrial sites thanks to innovative and proprietary technologies Developing integrated Biorefineries aimed at enhancing the peculiarities and the biodiversity of the local areas Implementing collaborations with Agriculture, Research, Industry, Institutions & Associations, large- scale distribution (LOD), big brands INFRASTRUCTURES IN THE LOCAL AREAS AS A KEY ELEMENT FOR BIOECONOMY: THE CONTRIBUTION OF NOVAMONT Novamont made pioneering investments in Italy re-activating many industrial sites, thanks to its proprietary technologies, thus giving Italy the possibility to grow in the bioplastics sector and laying the foundations for the growth of a significant range of biochemicals. 3

The landfill gas produced by biowaste consists mainly of methane, which is 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide in terms of climate change effects in the 100-years time horizon (source: IPCC) If not collected properly, leachate can contaminate groundwater and soil Landfilling means irrecoverable loss of resources and land Quality soil conditioner to be used in agriculture to combat desertification and soil erosion Carbon sink effect In some EU countries compostable bioplastics have become an integrating element in the biowaste management thanks to an overall agreement with the composting network cases of excellence where composting and AD transform biowaste into new resources, such as biogas and high quality compost, thereby closing the organic carbon cycle of the bioeconomy THE EXAMPLE OF BIOWASTE: TURNING A PROBLEM INTO AN OPPORTUNITY COMPOST AS DRIVER FOR SOILS FERTILITYORGANIC WASTE IN LANDFILL BUT THE EU CIRCULAR ECONOMY PACKAGE (WASTE FRAMEWORK DIRECTIVE) STILL DOES NOT ENSURE A MANDATORY SEPARATE COLLECTION OF BIOWASTE

What to do? Recognize the value of diversity (tradition/innovation) and of the origin of products (quality vs quantity) Support the creation of the Bioeconomy infrastructures as local integrated biorefineries with high content of innovation and linked to the local tradition/challenges, with multiple chains (Sustainable Regions Programs) Campaigns to encourage adoption of ‘bio-based’ in procurement criteria for specific product and materials classes which demonstrate the clear sustainability, economic, social and performance benefits and characteristics (i.e. for regions which share certain interests in bio-based value chains and benefits) Fiscal measures, access to credit, to recognize the contribution of industries investing in bioeconomy infrastructures inside integrated projects in Sustainable Regions to acknowledge the catalytic effect for local areas Fieldwork education programs using integrated projects as interdisciplinary training centers involving private, public Institutions, Foundations (green jobs program) “Zero organic waste in landfill” campaign The Bio- Based Industry (BBI) PPP as a key acceleration tool for Bioeconomy
