Technical department

Technical Department Mrs K. Kelly (Acting PT) Mr S. Dalziel (PTG) Mr G. Jack Mr J. Magee Mr G. Bain (Technician) Members of Staff:- Department Layout:- The department comprises four rooms; two graphic / design Rooms and two practical workshops.

Technical Subjects Technical subjects are taught one period per week in first year and two periods per week in second year. The courses prepare the pupils for their option choice at the end of second year by giving them a taster of the two subjects offered by the Technical Department in third year, namely, Design & Manufacture and Graphic Communication. In S1-S3 the pupils follow a broad general education aspiring to National 4 and 5 at the end of 4 th year in both Graphic Communication and Design & Manufacture. Pupils following the Design and Manufacture course are given the additional choice of choosing to continue with Design & Manufacture or Practical Craft Skills in 4 th year. In the senior phase pupils can undertake National 6 (higher) Graphic Communication, National 6 (higher) Product Design and Practical Craft Skills is also offered at National 4 and 5.

Design & Manufacture This design-based subject offers an opportunity for all pupils to develop their design and create practical artefacts for the 21 st century. S3 Course :- Evaluate an existing product:- All pupils will work in groups, each group will evaluate an existing product using the design factors and produce an evaluation folio as assessment evidence. Material testing:- Individual pupils will test a number of materials to find their properties, each pupil will complete test sheets. Projects:- There are three main projects in third year devised to build up skills in the workshop using different materials and processes. Pot Stand The first project is a pot stand, which the pupils construct using four different joints and the feet are turned in the metal lathe. This is good development work for both Practical Craft Skills and the Design and Manufacture course. Tea Light Holder This project will involve some basic design skills and the use of the CNC router during it’s manufacture. Thermometer This project will be designed from first principles using the design process right through to completion with a finished prototype, similarly to the Product Design course. Assessment:- Throughout the course pupils will be assessed on their progress with their; evaluation folio, material test sheet, completed artefacts, design folios and through unit tests in woodwork, plastics and metalwork.

Graphic Communication S3 Course Course content Unit 1 2D Graphics:- 2D Graphics – Pupils will gain skills in producing; 2D drawing, sketches and realistic rendered sketches of everyday objects. They will also produce manual orthographic drawing using drawing boards and instruments. This will be achieved using computer software, pencils, pastels and marker pens. Unit 2 3D Graphics:- Pupils will gain skills in producing 3D sketches and drawings. They will apply the skills gained in 2D graphics to produce presentation work, such as; advertising displays and presentation graphs. Folio:- A selection of work from the 2D and 3D Graphics will be compiled into a folio. S4 Course The course provides a practical introduction to graphics used in the world of work. Learners will gain drawing skills in sketching, orthographic drawing, computer graphics and desk top publishing. They will also understand the effects of colour, texture and proportion and be able to justify choices in these areas. Course Units:- 2D Graphic Communication 3D and Pictorial Graphic communication Added Value Unit (Themed folio assignment)

Higher Graphic Communication Higher course structure:- Throughout the course of the year the pupils complete unit work and a thematic presentation of their choice. They then sit a final external exam. Course assessment:- Thematic Presentation 60 External Exam 140 (40 marks written) (100 marks drawing) Unit work (must be completed in order to sit final exam):- TG1 (Pictorial Views):- One point and two point perspective, isometric, planometric, cabinet oblique, exploded isometric and sectional isometric. (Geometric Construction):- Intersections, interpenetration, development of prisms and cylinders, ellipse construction, tangency and true shapes. TG2 (Orthographic Views) Full, partial and interrupted views, detail drawing, assembly drawing and location drawing. (Sectional views) Full or half and stepped sections. (Auxiliary Views) Auxiliary Elevation and Plan. Computer Graphics Orthographic Drawing, Rendered Drawings and DTP.

Product Design The Higher Product Design course comprises of internal unit work and externally assessed elements. Unit Work is assessed using NAB materials:- Unit 1(a) Evaluate a commercial product. Unit 1(b) Establish a design specification from a given brief. Unit 2 Developing Design Proposals. Unit 3 Manufacturing Products. It is essential that all pupils complete the unit work in order to sit the final exam. External Assessment:- Design Assignment. In February of each year the pupils get issued with a design assignment, which contains four possible design specifications relating to a situation. They have to take one of these specifications from initial concept stage through to final idea in 10 hours on 8 pages of A3 paper. This is worth 70 marks of their final grade. Exam Paper. Approximately 8 questions worth a total of 70 marks.

Practical Craft Skills Woodworking Intermediate 1 & 2 The Practical Craft Skills - Woodworking course is a practically based course. The pupil's skills in woodworking are improved by manufacturing a variety of artefacts e.g. Mug tree, breakfast tray, wall unit, lamp and clock. The course is designed to give the pupils the experience of using a wide range of different tools and machinery found in the workshop and enhancing their knowledge and understanding of general aspects of practical woodworking. Course Details The course is made up of three units, pupils will manufacture a different model in each of the units and will then undertake a Final Project.
