Multimedia Fundamentals

Key Concepts/Terms Key Concepts Define multimedia List multimedia elements Summarize how multimedia elements convey information Terms Multimedia Medium Media Interactive media Rich media Text Graphic Animation Audio Video Element Ensure

Multimedia Elements Terms definitions The integration of interactive elements such as text, graphics, animation, audio, and video using computer technology. Element A component Medium Any means of conveying information

Terms definitions Media Interactive media Rich media Plural form of medium Interactive media Media that allows active participation by the user, or viewer Rich media Interactive multimedia productions that use technology such as Flash, Java applets, and streaming video. Interactive media example: If you have purchased tickets online for a movie or participated in an online survey or poll, you are using interactive media. You were required to input information in order for the application to run.

Multimedia Elements Text Ensure Graphic Consists of words, numbers, or symbols Ensure Guarantee Graphic Can be a drawing, chart, picture, diagram, painting Also called images Text is enhanced when used with other multimedia elements. Example: a company newsletter might show text combined with graphics to attract attention and to explain concepts. The individual or team creating the multimedia must ensure how the text looks in its finished format.

Key Tasks Analyzing client needs Identifying project requirements & limits Creating prototypes Producing & utilizing graphics, audio & video Time Management Using Flash, Producer, Dreamweaver, Acrobat, Photoshop… Identify & research target audience Vary by job – example Web Design vs Multimedia events planner 6

Multimedia Elements Animation Audio Video Representation of motion in graphics or text Audio Live or recorded sound Can include Voice-over or narration Audio effects Music Video Live or recorded moving images

Using Multimedia Elements What to consider Audience and purpose Questions to consider What is the purpose? Do I want to entertain or inform? Am I trying to teach or persuade my viewers? What is the expected age of my audience (Remember, you project may be seen by viewers of all ages.) Consider you purpose and audience before deciding which elements will best help you accomplish your purpose. Example: if you are creating a presentation to teach someone how to fold paper into shapes for origami, a short video of the action might be easier to follow than a series of pictures or a text description. Animated video might be the best option if you are demonstrating proper first aid techniques.

Review What are the five types of multimedia elements Text, graphics, animation, audio, & video

Review Explain the different purposes for each type of multimedia element. Text—used to communicate a message with written words, numbers, or symbols Graphic—drawings, charts, diagrams, paintings, pictures, or photographs are used to provide visual interest Animation—adding motion to graphics or text Audio—using live or recorded sound Video—live or recorded moving images

Types of Multimedia Projects Key Concepts List six multimedia project formats Describe common uses of each type of multimedia project format Summarize guidelines for choosing a multimedia format Terms Print publication Presentation Tutorial Simulation Video game Demonstrate interact

Multimedia Project Formats Formats include Print publications Tutorials Simulations Games Web sites Most multimedia projects can be delivered on a CD or DVE. While a Web site is itself a project format, it can also be used to deliver another multimedia project, such as a presentation or tutorial.

Multimedia Project Formats Print Publications A document that can be printed Examples: Flyers, brochures, magazines, cards, banners, posters, coupons, and invitations Presentations A sequence of slides that usually incorporation multimedia elements Tutorials A computer application that trains or teaches content or skills. Tutorials usually demonstrate (or illustrate and explain) new information. (Microtype Pro)

Multimedia Project Formats Simulation A computer-based model or real-life situation Uses elements such as animation, video and audio to reproduce the environment or situation that the simulation is imitating Games Combining multimedia elements designed primarily for the entertainment of the participant or user relying strongly on audio, graphics, animation and video for prompts, feedback, and setting.

Multimedia Project Formats Web Sites Versatile multimedia tool Can host other multimedia projects Can overlap other multimedia project formats Can be design as a tutorial application or as a video game Can include links simulations or tutorials Multimedia only benefits a Web site when it helps meet its purpose and goals.

Choosing Multimedia Project Formats Questions Consider these questions when deciding your project’s format and delivery method What information do you want to convey? How do you want users to interact with the project? Will they answer questions, as in a tutorial? Will the users control the outcome as in a simulation or game? What multimedia elements do you plan to include in your project? What information you want to convey? A slide show presentation might be a good option for sharing knowledge, while a tutorial or game might be better to teach a skill. 3. If you are including video and audio, consider whether all Web sites can handle the size of the files or if a DVD would be a better delivery method.

Review Explain why a magazine is a multimedia project. Answer Because it generally is created using computer software to combine text and graphics.

Review Describe how multimedia tutorials and simulations are similar and different. Similar Interactive Use combination of elements

Tutorial: audio, video, text Review You are creating a multimedia project to show your classmates how to perform a specific task, such as cooking a dish or playing the guitar. Determine which elements would work best and explain your choice in a brief essay. Tutorial: audio, video, text
