Introduction to Exponents Brought to you by powerpointpros.com

What is an Exponent? Using exponents help us to write repeated multiplication in a simple way.

Where is an Exponent? 5454 The little number to the right of and up higher than the big number is the exponent. This larger number to the left of the exponent is called the base number.

Practice Find the exponent in each number.

Practice Now, find the base of each number. 5353

Reading an Exponent This is how you read a number that has an exponent: (base) to the (exponent) power 5454 For example, when we read this number, we would say, “5 to the 4 th power.”

Reading an Exponent 7575 Likewise, when we read this number, we would say, “7 to the 5 th power.” This is how you read a number that has an exponent: (base) to the (exponent) power

“Cubed” and “Squared” Two special numbers for exponents are the numbers 2 and 3. Numbers with 2 as an exponent can be read as “(Base number) squared.” Numbers with 3 as an exponent can be read as “(Base number) cubed.”

“Cubed” and “Squared” For example, 7 2 We can still read this number as “7 to the 2 nd power,” but we can also read this number as “7 squared.”

“Cubed” and “Squared” Likewise, 6 3 We can still read this number as “6 to the 3 rd power,” but we can also read this number as “6 cubed.”

Practice Let’s practice reading these numbers with exponents!

Practice How can we read these numbers with exponents? 9595 “9 to the 5 th power”

Practice How can we read these numbers with exponents?8 “8 to the 8 th power”

Practice How can we read these numbers with exponents? 10 4 “10 to the 4 th power”

Practice How can we read these numbers with exponents? 5353 “5 to the 3 rd power” or “5 cubed”

Practice How can we read these numbers with exponents? 3232 “3 to the 2 nd power” or “3 squared”

Finding the Value of a Number with an Exponent This is how you find the value of a number with an exponent (find what it equals): The base tells us which number to multiply. The exponent tells us how many times to multiply the base by itself.

Finding the Value So, if we have this number and we’re trying to find out what it equals, we just do this: 5353 Find the base. This number tells us which number we are going to multiply. Then find the exponent. This number tells us how many times we’re going to multiply the base by itself.

Finding the Value Since our base number is 5, that is the number we are going to repeatedly multiply. 5353

5353 Finding the Value And since our exponent is 3, that is the number of times we are going to multiply our base number (5) by itself.

Finding the Value Let’s find the value of this number with an exponent! Our base is 5, so that is the number we are multiplying… …and our exponent is 3, so we’re going to use five 3 times!

Finding the Value After multiplying 5, our base, by itself 3 times, we can see that 5 cubed is equal to = 125

Finding the Value Let’s try another example!

Finding the Value 8282 The number 8 is the base, the number we are going to repeatedly multiply. The number 2 is the exponent, which tells us how many times we’re going to multiply the base by itself. 8 8 To find the value of this number, we must multiply the base number 8 together 2 times (the number shown in our exponent.)

Finding the Value = 64 We can see that 8 X 8 = 64, so the value of 8 squared is 64.

Practice Find the value of each number with an exponent.

Practice Find the value of each number with an exponent = 36 because 6 6 = 36

Practice Find the value of each number with an exponent = 8 because = 8

Practice Find the value of each number with an exponent = 49 because 7 7 = 49

Practice Find the value of each number with an exponent = 64 because = 64

Practice Find the value of each number with an exponent = 81 because 9 9 = 81

Practice Find the value of each number with an exponent = 16 because = 16

Practice Find the value of each number with an exponent

Great job! You now know what exponents are, how to read numbers with exponents, and how to find the value of numbers with exponents!
