The Plan … 15-minute presentation slots Buzz Groups for comments and questions

Where I work

Welcome to my world! 5,

Language and Culture So … what exactly is language? Can you teach or learn a language without any exposure to the culture(s) which use the language?

Time for a Buzz!

The ‘Components’ of Language

What time is it? Well … it was raining, wasn’t it. Wife: Husband: Pragmatics in Action

A more scientific example If you increase the temperature of the mixture to 150°C, a reaction will occur. Does this sound reasonable?

“When we look about us towards external objects, and consider the operation of causes, we are never able, in a single instance, to discover any power or necessary connexion; any quality, which binds the effect to the cause, and renders the one an infallible consequence of the other.” David Hume 1737

National Commercial Bank, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia Faisal: David, could you come up now, please. David: Sure, I’m on my way. Faisal: N’shallah.

So what about this one? If you had increased the temperature of the mixture to 150°C, a reaction would have occurred.

Time for a Buzz!

Boss: “We’ve run out of face masks” You: a) “I’ll order some on Tuesday.” b) “I’m going to order some on Tuesday.” c) “I’m ordering some on Tuesday.” (You work in the Stores.)

Summing Up … Language isn’t neutral - even scientific language - but full of cultural assumptions. If you’re aware of this, you’ll find it easier to communicate - and to understand what happened when communication breaks down!

The Plan A quick look at (some of the) different systems A way of deciding which ones to use

Asynchronous Communication Google Docs Buzzword Jing VoiceThread Ning

Synchronous Communication MS Messenger Skype Connect Pro Second Life

So … with all these choices, how do you decide which system(s) to use?

Looking for a ‘common technological denominator’ “The irony of the current situation is that the classroom is a broadband environment and can be used to transmit as much information as the senses can absorb. Yet we mainly use it for learning with words which require little bandwidth.” Tiffin, J & Rajasingham L, In Search of the Virtual Class, London, Routledge, 1995 “For the moment, let us accept that the amount of bandwidth is a measure of the amount of information that can be transmitted at a given time by a channel … Bandwidth
