Maria Agnesi Julius Caesar Leonardo da Vinci Leonardo di Caprio Fibonacci Madonna Michelangelo Sophia Loren Zola All of these are famous Italians, but are they the ones we mean?.

We are interested in the Roman Emperors & soldiers who invaded Britain. Watch our video.

Emperor Julius Caesar tries to invade Britannia. Watch Julius Caesar try to invade Britain.

What we learnt about Julius Caesar by Harry and Sam. Born in 100 BC Died44BC GREAT GENERAL AND THIS MADE HIM POPULAR

When the Romans arrived in Britain they came face to face with some tribes called the Celts. The Iceni tribe were led by a very brave woman called Boudicca.

Things we learnt about Boudicca Boudicca was Queen of the Iceni, a Celtic tribe from East Anglia. She led a famous revolt against the Romans at Colchester. When her troops were defeated she took poison and killed herself.

We learnt there were lots of different ranks of soldiers.

Types of soldier A Centurion was in charge of each century. His second in command was an optio. Each century had a signifer (standard bearer) who carried the century’s emblem. Each cohort was led by a junior officer called a tribunus militum. The praefectus castrorum was in charge of building and organising camps. The legion was led by a senior officer called a legatus. Each legion owned a silver eagle known as the aquila which was carried by the aquilifer.

Watch our moving Timeline.

Where exactly do the Romans fit on the Time Line We walked back in time past the following periods in history :- 1960’s – The Beatles 1952 – Queen Elizabeth ll 1939 – 1945 – WW ll 1914 – 1918 – WW l 1837 – 1901 – The Victorians – Fire of London 1603 – 1714 – The Stuarts – 1603 – The Tudors 1300 – 1600 – Aztecs & Incas 1000 – 1450 – The Middle Ages 1066 – The Battle of Hastings 790 – 1000 – Vikings 449 – Anglo Saxons 0 – The Birth of Christ 1000 BC – 400 AD – Ancient Rome

We can find out by looking at some maps. Watch how we do it.

Where is Rome on the Map? And how big was the Roman Empire? Rome was a town in Italy. The Roman Empire spread across most of the countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea.

The Romans brought many new ideas and inventions to Britain. One of them was “The Roman Baths”.

What did they do at the Roman Baths ? The first bath-houses were simple washing facilities for men only, but they soon grew to become popular meeting places where thousands of people spent their leisure hours. Clothes were left in the apodyterium. The tepidarium was a warm room with a small pool. The caldarium was a hot room with a bathing pool. The hottest room was the laconicum. The frigidarium was a room with a large cold swimming pool.

We can find out about the Romans from their Mosaics.

Just how did they make those beautiful mosaics ? Mosaics were made by creating beautiful patterns out of small coloured stones called tesserae. The designers would lay out their design, first in sand, to get the approval of the owner of the house. Then they would cover the whole design with sticky cloth and pick it up and place it onto wet cement, wherever it was needed. They would then wet the cloth and remove it to reveal beautiful geometric designs and animals.

How did they build their roads so straight?

Straight roads and no corner shops The Romans were very clever mathematicians and knew how to build straight roads and square buildings. They used a tool called a groma which had strings hanging at each corner and men holding sticks until everything lined up. They used 1000 double paces of a Soldier to mark out 1 mile.

We learnt quite a bit about the Romans. By Class 2 – Autumn 2005.
