DECIDE DECIDE ( Diagnostic Enhancement of Confidence by an International Distributed Environment ) Laura Leone - GARR DECIDE Project Coordinator From neurological research to clinical praxis: a European e-Service to support the early diagnosis of neurodegeneration

Laura Leone – GARR 8° e-infrastructure Concertation meeting 2 The DECIDE project goals To provide the Neuroscientific and Medical community with a dedicated Grid-based e- Infrastructure relying on Neugrid and GEANT To deploy a secure and user-friendly service for the early diagnosis and research on dementia and other brain diseases linking large distributed DBs of multimodal neuroimages To validate the e-Infrastructure and the services through application to real patient cases To propose a long-term vision for the sustainability of the e- Infrastructure and its extension to new communities and pathologies To disseminate the results and provide training programmes promoting the adoption of the DECIDE e-Infrastructure and service.

Laura Leone – GARR 8° e-infrastructure Concertation meeting 3 The DECIDE project Requested EC contribution:~ 2.4 M€ Duration: 24 Months Started on the 1 st September 2010 Submitted to EC Call: FP7-INFRASTRUCTURES – Virtual Research Communities GARR provides overall coordination Scientific coordination entrusted to neuGRID principal investigator Involves 13 European Partners + a European network of major reference centres in Neurology, and patient advocate societies all across Europe All stakeholders involved, from the network layer to end-users

Laura Leone – GARR 8° e-infrastructure Concertation meeting 4 DECIDE Workplan - I3 Project structure Networking Activities Overall coordination of the project (NA1) Creation stable liaisons with relevant stakeholders in the scientific and eInfrastructure domains (NA2) dissemination of results and reaching out to the medical community, (NA3) Service Activities Network and GRID provisioning and management (SA1) Exposing the medical database to the applications running on the e-Infrastructure (SA2) Research and development Activities Porting of the diagnostic alghorithms (JRA1) Design of the diagnostic service (JRA2) User validation and Testing (JRA3)

Laura Leone – GARR 8° e-infrastructure Concertation meeting 5 Consortium 1 CONSORTIUM GARR Italy 3 CONSORZIO COMETA Italy Network and GRID Infrastructure Partners 2 CNR 6 UNIVERSITY OF GENOA - UNIGE Italy 7 UNIVERSITY OF FOGGIA - UNIFG Italy 9 MAAT FRANCE - maat G France 10 IMPERIAL COLLEGE– United Kingdom 11 UNIWERSYTET WARSZAWSKI - Poland Application Layer Partners 4 FATEBENEFRATELLI - Italy 5 UNIVERSITY SAN RAFFAELE - Italy 8 FONDAZIONE SDN - Italy 12 CENTRE HOSPITALIER UNIVERSITAIRE DE TOULOUSE - France 13 ALZHEIMER EUROPE - Luxembourg Clinical and Patient Layer Partners A new, very vertical approach to e-Health, targeting the needs of neuroscientists Community through the provisioning of an e-Infrastructure aimed at supporting them in the daily execution of the diagnosis

Laura Leone – GARR 8° e-infrastructure Concertation meeting 6 SA1 - Installation and maintenance of the enabling network and grid infrastructure SA2 - Exposure of and access to the reference databases JRA1 - Porting of the diagnostic algorithms JRA2 - Design of the Diagnostic Service JRA3 – User Validation and Testing DECIDE layering structure

Laura Leone – GARR 8° e-infrastructure Concertation meeting 7 Strategic ideas behind the project Widening the access to highly specialized tools and techniques CIVET/ADABoost – RMI images GridSPM – Pet/SPECT images EEG patterns Building a European reference e-Services pilot project including its own e-Infrastructure progressive extension of e-Science in the domain of neurology Providing the new European Virtual Research Communities with powerful diagnostic tools currently available only to a restricted number of clinicians.

Laura Leone – GARR 8° e-infrastructure Concertation meeting 8 E-Service final infrastructure

Laura Leone – GARR 8° e-infrastructure Concertation meeting 9 DECIDE reference infrastructures Designed with NeuGRID as a reference infrastructure for m/w and structure the starting core MRI-based algorithms developed within NeuGRID will be endorsed by DECIDE OutGRID will act as the external gateway to liaise to other international infrastructures ( e.g. LONI, CBRAIN ) Both OutGRID & NeuGRID will also provide their outcomes w.r.t. data access policies, user requirements and standards to the DECIDE project Transferring results among projects will be eased by their expected timing GridSPM alghorithm, PET/SPECT based, is already deployed as diagnostic pilot at national scale

Laura Leone – GARR 8° e-infrastructure Concertation meeting 10 State of the Art Upgrading the DECIDE web portal to the e-Service portal with Applications (ADAboost, CIVET, GridSPM, EEG patterns) DECIDE VO has been created and authorized on partners grid- infrastructures Started Applications Optimization and Porting on GRID phase

Laura Leone – GARR 8° e-infrastructure Concertation meeting 11 Our requirements: what we need Access to very large European, even global, biomedical images distributed repositories Many processing resources to faster the extraction of bio-markers Collaboration with Projects which will assure standard services Feedback from clinical communities
