Module 7 Planning Training Sessions and Programmes
Unit 1 Planning a Practice
Learning Objectives Plan safe and appropriate practice sessions to meet the needs of your athletes Determine annual and seasonal goals Divide annual and seasonal plans into cycles and periods
Planning “Planning is the foundation of coaching, the key to designing safe, fun and sound practices for participants in sports.” “Planning is the foundation of coaching, the key to designing safe, fun and sound practices for participants in sports.” (Coaching Association of Canada) Coaches need to be clear about what they want to achieve and what needs to be done in order to achieve it. This takes good written plans for practice sessions.

Unit 2 Planning a Training Program
Objectives Determine annual and seasonal goals Determine annual and seasonal goals Divide annual and seasonal plans into cycles and periods Divide annual and seasonal plans into cycles and periods
Periodization As the athlete moves through the season, the coach will want to concentrate on training for different aspects of the sport at different times. As the athlete moves through the season, the coach will want to concentrate on training for different aspects of the sport at different times. This process is called periodization This process is called periodization The process of subdividing a long period of time( a season or a year) into smaller periods of time during which time the coach will focus on different types of training The process of subdividing a long period of time( a season or a year) into smaller periods of time during which time the coach will focus on different types of training
TRAINING PERIODS & CYCLES TRAINING PERIODS PREPARATION PREPARATION GENERAL GENERAL SPECIFIC SPECIFIC COMPETITION COMPETITION TRANSITION TRANSITION TRAINING CYCLES MICROCYCLE MICROCYCLE MESOCYCLE MESOCYCLE MACROCYCLE MACROCYCLE
General Preparation The longest phase Focus on general skill development Gross motor technical skills Teaching and correction Technique changes are made Teach rules and regulations Usually no competitions Focus on endurance training, goal setting, and general strength training
Specific Phase Develop sport specific strength and fitness More quality and higher intensity work Refining sport specific skills Develop game strategies and tactics Refine competition skills There will be some competitions
Competition Phase Focus is on competition preparation Develop competitive strategies Maintain fitness levels Maintain high skill performance Achieve personal bests…peaking Sharper competitive skills Major competitions occur
Transition Phase Focus on recovery Active rest Evaluate your past performance Set new goals
Designing a Training program Program is designed in cycles Cycles are periods of time that may vary in length, based on the training objectives for each period There are three cycles… Micro Meso Macro
Microcycle Made up of a series of practices Directed at specific training goals to be achieved 7 to 14 days duration
Mesocycle This is made up of 2 to 6 microcycles Usually about 2 to 6 weeks in duration Training is directed at achieving major training and competitive objectives
Macrocycle This is an annual or seasonal plan Can last 6 months to 4 years The outcome of the macrocycle is the sum total of all the goals and objectives from the micro and meso cycles
Summary A training program should be designed around training cycles Training cycles are used by the coach to improve specific areas of performance Planning is an important part of training Time spent in planning pays off in the end with an improved performance by the athlete
Summary Through the process of periodization, the coach will be able to divide the annual or seasonal plan into periods as follows: Through the process of periodization, the coach will be able to divide the annual or seasonal plan into periods as follows: General preparation period General preparation period Specific preparation period Specific preparation period Competition period Competition period Transition period Transition period
Summary A training program should be designed around cycles. The macro cycle which is the seasonal or annual plan is divided into meso and micro cycles, which details the work out times, specific training as well as all training and competitive goals and objectives.
