Who 2 The Asante Empire was established by Osei Tutu and his chief advisor Okomfo Anokye. osei tutu was the paramount chief also called the asantehene (king) of asante. okomfo anokye was his priest asante was formed by military power, which came from effective strategy and an early adoption of firearms. Osei tutu realized that he had to fuse the small separate kingdoms around Kumasi to defeat the powerful denkyre to the south of them other Asante kingdoms merged with Kumasi, and Osei Tutu led their combined forces in a successful war against the Denkyer. osei tutu created the golden stool, which he said represented the ancestors of asante’s past that watched over the newly created empire (blackpast.org)

3 ● Gold was the major product of the Asante Empire. ● Osei Tutu made the gold mines royal possessions. Also he made gold dust the circulating currency in the empire. Asante citizens, even the poor subjects used gold dust as ornamentation on their cloths and other possessions. ● Asante supplied slaves to British and Dutch traders on the coast; in return they received firearm which helped with their territorial expansion. ● The Portuguese were the most active Europeans in West Africa. ● Osei Tutu (the Asantehene) and his priest OKomfo Anokye, unified the independent chiefdoms into the most powerful, political, and military state in the coastal region.
