DESTination RAIL Decision Support Tool for Rail Infrastructure EU Project No Railway Pro Investment Summit Building the New CEE Railway Economy Bucharest 7 October 2015

DESTination RAIL Decision Support Tool for Rail Infrastructure EU Project No DESTinationRAIL Decision Support Tool for Rail Infrastructure Managers

DESTination RAIL Decision Support Tool for Rail Infrastructure EU Project No What is the DESTinationRAIL Project Horizon 2020 funded Runs for 3 years from May 2015 to April 2018 Looking at reducing Infrastructure Costs Delivers practical solutions 3

DESTination RAIL Decision Support Tool for Rail Infrastructure EU Project No Challenge 4 Derailment St. Moritz on 13th August 2014 Flood damage at Dawlish near Devon in the UK, February 2014 Despite the very encouraging safety record, a number of high profile failures of rail infrastructure have occurred in recent years, with the incidence appearing to increase in response to climate challenges and aging networks amongst other factors.

DESTination RAIL Decision Support Tool for Rail Infrastructure EU Project No Challenge 5 IM’s are managing ageing rail infrastructure with 95% of the network having been built before EU transport policy provides the challenge to increase the productivity of existing rail networks, prioritise renewal and optimise new sections to reduce bottlenecks, increase productivity and achieve a switch from freight transport by road to rail.

DESTination RAIL Decision Support Tool for Rail Infrastructure EU Project No Project Aim The aim of DESTination RAIL is to provide solutions for a number of problems faced by EU infrastructure managers. Novel techniques for identifying, analysing and remediating critical rail infrastructure will be developed.

DESTination RAIL Decision Support Tool for Rail Infrastructure EU Project No Objectives These solutions will be implemented using a decision support tool, which allows rail infrastructure managers to make rational investment choices, based on reliable data

DESTination RAIL Decision Support Tool for Rail Infrastructure EU Project No Consortium

DESTination RAIL Decision Support Tool for Rail Infrastructure EU Project No (GDG, IE, UZ, HZ, TUM, ZAG, NGI, NTNU, UT, SZ) A review of key problems faced by Railway IM’s case histories (e.g. slope instability, bridge scour, switches and tracks and structures will be compiled. Consideration will be given to how changes in use (increased speed and or loading),climate change etc. might affect the performance of infrastructure and cause increased incidence of existing or new or heretofore unseen problems. This will ensure that the relevant issues are covered in a robust manner in the Destination Rail project. Inventory of Problems

DESTination RAIL Decision Support Tool for Rail Infrastructure EU Project No Embankments Instabilities and excesive deformation of embankment on railway line L103 from km to km

DESTination RAIL Decision Support Tool for Rail Infrastructure EU Project No Slopes Taiwan 2010 Croatia 2010

DESTination RAIL Decision Support Tool for Rail Infrastructure EU Project No Slopes Ireland (2009)UK (2013)

DESTination RAIL Decision Support Tool for Rail Infrastructure EU Project No Slovenian Tunnels Freezing water from poor drainage Lack of support allowing change in cross-section

DESTination RAIL Decision Support Tool for Rail Infrastructure EU Project No Problems Fatigue damage on tracks

DESTination RAIL Decision Support Tool for Rail Infrastructure EU Project No Problems – Scour (UK)

DESTination RAIL Decision Support Tool for Rail Infrastructure EU Project No Problems Flooding Coastal Flooding Heavy Rainfall

DESTination RAIL Decision Support Tool for Rail Infrastructure EU Project No Impact – Demonstration Projects A number of novel monitoring techniques will be implemented on the Boyne Viaduct in Ireland. The IMS system will collect data and real-time risk assessments will be undertaken which will feed the decision support tool. Thus the fully implemented tool can be demonstrated to IM’s and certification bodies.

DESTination RAIL Decision Support Tool for Rail Infrastructure EU Project No Impact- Demonstration Projects The construction of an embankment using marginal fill materials on a live railway line in Slovenia Switch and Crossing monitoring in Norway Rock slope surveying using drones in Croatia and Ireland Large scale testing of triaxial and testing of Geosynthetic Reinforced Soil in Slovenia 18

DESTination RAIL Decision Support Tool for Rail Infrastructure EU Project No User Workshops Traffic Flow model Whole Life Cycle Analysis model Decision Support Tool 19

DESTination RAIL Decision Support Tool for Rail Infrastructure EU Project No Summary Project will produce practical ways of reducing costs for major infrastructure maintenance through Pilot Projects Provide support to Infrastructure Managers in maximising capacity through the use of the Decision Support Tool Provide Guidance Documents at the Final Conference to assist in implementation 20
