Introduction to Literature Circles BARRIE LITERATURE 8

TYPE 1  P.5 (bot) – 9/9/2015 – Type 1 – Literature Circles  “Write 5 lines about Literature Circles.”

What are Literature Circles?  Literature Circles are small reading groups. Each group consists of 4 or 5 students.  Each group gets to choose its OWN book to read.

What are Literature Circles?  Each group reads will have reading deadlines that are unique to the book they are reading.  You will have time in class to read, but you will also need to read at home to complete the readings.  Once a week (usually on Thursdays), groups get together to talk about what they’re reading.

How Literature Circles Work  In preparation for each week’s Literature Circles meeting, students READ their assigned pages/chapters and complete one of FIVE Literature Circles jobs.

Literature Circles Jobs  Discussion Director  Writes high-level questions to be used for group discussions  Connector  Takes events from the book and connects them to real-life experiences

Literature Circles Jobs  Literary Luminary  Finds important and interesting passages in the text to share with the group.  Summarizer  Summarizes the section of the book that was assigned.  Illustrator  Illustrates scenes from the book

Literature Circles Meetings  Students find a spot in the classroom to meet.  They bring their books and completed job sheets.  Students talk about what they read, and they share, one at a time, their job sheets.  During meetings, it’s everyone’s job to………talk!
