ICT Disaster Recovery Plan Monitoring & Audit Committee 23 rd November 2010

Why have a Disaster Recovery plan  An ITC Disaster Recovery plan is a pre- programmed sequence of events to recover IT systems and Communications  ICT DR plan dovetails into the Corporate Business Continuity Plan  An active document that is updated and changed as our business changes Nick Hayward – 23 rd November 2010

Kettering Borough Council Disaster Recovery Plan  Covers three main areas  Systems Loss  Partial Building Loss  Total Building Loss  Full DR documentation stored off-site  Flexible recovery priorities based on time of year (e.g. March – Annual Billing of Council Tax) Nick Hayward – 23 rd November 2010

Capability if System Loss occurred  Single Systems Loss  Using replacement hardware a single system can be recovered within hours of loss by using our real- time backup system recovery option  Multiple Systems Loss  Using replacement hardware and/or the emergency procurement of hardware from our DR listed providers, systems can be restored in a priority order using our Real-time Backup system recovery option Nick Hayward – 23 rd November 2010

Capability of Partial Building Loss  Partial Building Loss  Where partial building loss occurs at any location the IT team would link (where necessary) into the business continuity plan.  Systems would be recovered on a priority order based on instruction from the Business Continuity Plan  Additional hardware would be fast tracked from suppliers listed in the ICT DR Plan  Staff could be redeployed to other sites and continue to access systems as normal Nick Hayward – 23 rd November 2010

Capability of Full Building Loss  Where a full loss of a building occurs, the ICT DR Plan would form part of the Corporate Business Continuity Plan  Emergency procurement of hardware within days of order  All core systems available within seven days  Emergency telephony available within hours Nick Hayward – 23 rd November 2010

Backup and Restore systems  Kettering Borough Council use Microsoft Data Protection Manager for real time backups  Data Protection Manager is Disk to Disk to tape technology making it very fast  The DPM servers are deployed within the backup computer room at the depot  Real time backups allow for minimal data loss when system recovery is needed Nick Hayward – 23 rd November 2010

Additional Resilience  Kettering Borough Council uses additional mirrored storage hosted across two sites  Various datasets are backed up to DVD and stored within the fireproof safe in the Corn Market Hall  Various ADSL’s are deployed to allow sites to be linked up in an emergency  Home and remote working technologies can be quickly deployed Nick Hayward – 23 rd November 2010

Questions ? Nick Hayward – 23 rd November 2010
