5 G RADUATION R EQUIREMENTS FOR THE C LASS OF

4 GRADUATION REQUIREMENT #1: Earn 24 credits to graduate Earn credits by passing classes A passing grade is a “D” or better Pass 48 one semester classes to earn 24 credits (Each class is worth.5 credits) Most students take 48 total classes during their 4 years of high school and can earn a maximum of 24 credits Semester grades are permanently on your high school transcript

GRADUATION REQUIREMENT #2: E ARN ENOUGH CREDITS IN EACH OF 10 ACADEMIC AREAS English credits (8 semester classes) Social Studies credits ( 6 semester classes) Math credits (6 semester classes) *Algebra 1-2, Geometry 1-2, Algebra 3-4 or equivalent Science Lab credits (6 semester classes) Occupational Ed/Technology credit (2 semester classes) *.5 must be a Technology Credit PE credits ( 3 semester classes) Health -.5 (1 semester class) Fine/Performing Arts credits (4 semester classes) World Language – 2.0 credits (4 semester classes) Electives – 4.0 credits (8 semester classes) 5

GRADUATION REQUIREMENT #3: M UST P ASS 3 STATE TESTS 1. High School English Language Arts Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBAC)- 10 th Grade and/or 11 th Grade 2. High School Math Smarter Balanced Assessment (SBAC)- 10 th Grade and/or 11 th Grade 3. Biology End-of-Course Test (EOC) Students who do not pass these tests will be given additional chances to take the test in grades 11 and 12. 6

GRADUATION REQUIREMENT #4: o Develop a High School & Beyond Plan that focuses on what you will do after you graduate. U SE YOUR C OURSE C ATALOG TO LEARN Step One: Read pages 1-2 very carefully to review graduation requirements and to learn about scheduling and schedule changes. Step Two: Browse pages 2-6. These pages list every course we offer at CJH for 9 th graders. Course descriptions give very important information about the classes. The key at the bottom of every page tells you the type of credit you earn for each class ([M] is math, [EL] is elective etc.). Some classes can be used for different areas. For example, Digital Communications can be used as either Technology [T] or Occupational Education [O]. Some classes have requirements that you must meet BEFORE you take the class. These “pre-requisites” are noted just below the course name and/or in the description. Browse pages 6-8 in your Course Catalog. These pages talk about College Requirements & Planning Tools. 10

SELECT YOUR E LECTIVE C LASSES ONLY All students will be automatically placed in these classes: English 9 - Full Year (2 Semesters) Math (Algebra, Geometry or Algebra 3-4) - Full Year (2 Semesters) Lab Science 9- Full Year (2 Semesters) Contemporary World Studies - Full Year (2 Semesters) 11

9 TH G RADE H ONORS P ROGRAM We offer Honors in English, Lab Science 9 - Chemistry and Contemporary World Studies for 9 th graders. Honors classes are challenging. Students who choose to apply for Honors should have high interest in the subject(s) and should expect to complete more work independently, outside of class. ALL students must apply and be accepted before enrolling in Honors courses. Grades and test scores will be used to determine whether a student is ready for Honors classes. Students in regular or Honors 8 th grade classes can apply for 9 th grade Honors classes. We encourage students to challenge themselves by taking Honors courses. 12

H ONORS : H OW TO A PPLY In order to apply ALL students must: Get a gold Honors Application from your 3 rd period teacher today Complete and return the Honors Application with a parent signature (Please return on Friday, March 11 th ) Remember: Some students take all three Honors courses, and others just take one or two. 13
