Key Stage 4 Your first chance to make some real choices about your education Q What makes KS4 so different….? Believe! Achieve! Exceed!

Qualifications for KS4 General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) The main features of the new GCSEs are:  A new grading scale of 9 to 1 will be used, with 9 being the top grade.  Assessment will be mainly by exam.  There will be new, more demanding content.  Most pupils take 9 GCSEs Believe! Achieve! Exceed!

Qualifications for KS4 Business & Technology Education Council (BTEC) BTECs are vocationally related qualifications, developing knowledge and understanding by applying learning and skills in a work-related context. Equivalent to 1 GCSE at Assessment and exam Believe! Achieve! Exceed!

Qualifications for KS4 CiDA Certificate in Digital Applications Vocational qualification which covers the more creative aspects of computing. Assessed by a practical exam. The optional units are assessed by a project. Believe! Achieve! Exceed!

The Core Curriculum All students study Maths (8 hrs) – 1 GCSE English Language and Literature (8 hrs) – 2 GCSEs Science (8 hrs) – 2 GCSEs Personal and Social Studies (1 hr ) – no exam Religious Studies (2 hrs in Y10, 1 hr in Y11) – ½ GCSE Computing (1 hr in Y10, 2 hrs in Y11) Physical Education (2 hrs) – no exam

The Vocational Pathway This is a programme of GCSE and Vocational qualifications designed for students who are on track to achieve GCSE (or equivalent) grade 4-1 in most subjects by the time they finish year 11. You will be expecting to progress to a training course with employment such as an apprenticeship or to a full Level 2 vocational programme at college (eg. Mechanics). Believe! Achieve! Exceed!

The Open Pathway This is a programme of GCSE and Vocational qualifications designed for students who are on track to achieve GCSE grade 4 (or above) in most subjects by the time they finish year 11. You will be expecting to study A-Levels, BTECs or other Level 3 vocational pathways. Believe! Achieve! Exceed!

The Baccalaureate Pathway It is expected that students taking this programme will pass all their qualifications at grade 4-9. To achieve the EBacc you must pass English, Maths, two Sciences, a foreign Language and History or Geography, at GCSE grade 4 or above. You will be expecting to take A levels followed by a university degree. Believe! Achieve! Exceed!

Believe! Achieve! Exceed! Something we all need to remember The world your child will experience as an adult will be very different from the one we have experienced. There will be global competition. It is important therefore to consider developing the skills required to learn a new language.

How to make the right choice Choose subjects you enjoy. Follow a broad and balanced curriculum. Gather good information: Options Booklet, Form Tutor, Subject teachers, interviews with SLT Be careful to choose the course, not the teacher. Do not opt for courses because your friends have. Believe! Achieve! Exceed!

w/c 11 th January - Talk to subject teachers about courses you might be interested in opting for at Key Stage 4 and ask any questions you may have. Thursday 28 th January – Year 9 Subject Consultation Evening. This gives you an opportunity to discuss your initial thoughts with your subject teachers. Please use the Online booking system. January – KS4 courses explained in assemblies. Saturday 6th & Monday 8th February – Parent and student interview to discuss options with a member of SLT Wednesday 10 th February - Deadline for returning signed option form to your form tutor.
