Instructional Leadership in the Early Years: Best Practices for Professional Learning

3 Instructional Leadership Program Goals 1.Build capacity of leaders in early childhood programs to become instructional leaders (e.g. shift mindset, behavior) 2.Leaders provide job-embedded professional development for teachers 3.Leaders build organizational structures and processes that sustain improvements over time 4.Improve the quality of teaching and learning in classrooms 5.Programs advance to the highest tiers of quality in Illinois’s Quality Rating and Improvement System (ExceleRate)

5 Learning Experiences Training Technical Assistance Peer Learning Community Tools & Resources

In partnership with Lead Learn Excel Support Services Overview At-A-Glance Monthly Peer Learning Groups Peer Learning Monthly communities of practice for leaders begin in month four to connect leaders virtually—to reflect, examine their practice, and learn from/with peers. Technical Assistance Beginning in month two, individualized support helps leaders apply knowledge, establish systems and change instructional leadership practice Monthly Technical Assistance In later months, TA focuses on supporting leaders as they implement embedded routines of lesson planning and peer learning groups in their programs/schools Core Training Series A four-part series of monthly trainings: in- person, one-day learning experiences. Instructional Leadership Institute Two-day training introduces instructional excellence and continuous improvement in partnership with McCormick Center for Early Childhood Leadership Pre-K CLASS Observation Training Training Months 1–2Months 3–6 Months 7–8 Months 9–16 Advanced Training Series Advanced trainings build leader capacity to embed learning routines. Award of Excellence Trainings Award - specific sessions aligned with ExceleRate standards to help Gold-rated programs work towards Preschool Teaching & Learning and/or Infant & Toddler Services Awards. Pre-K CLASS Introductory Training (for teachers) Learning Environments Training Resources & Tools In later months, leaders are adapting and using tools in their programs and have continued access to free resources Inspiring Peak Performance book Lead. Learn. Excel. toolkit Travel reimbursements Video camera and tripod CLASS video library Online resource library Mini-grants (select programs only based on application) Protocols, job aids, and guides support transfer to practice of effective instructional leadership

7 Scope & Reach Participation: 309 instructional leaders statewide from school and community-based programs –145 school leaders, 44 school districts, 70 schools Partnerships: –Governor’s Office of Early Childhood Development –Illinois State Board of Education –Illinois Principals Association –McCormick Center for Early Childhood Leadership

8 Lessons Learned 1.Support form systems leaders is critical for instructional leaders to be successful (e.g. funding, resources, time, mandate, supervision) 2.Leaders need decision-making power to drive organizational change 3.Leaders need to focus on building processes, routines, and structures within site to effectively implement and sustain JEPD 4.Leaders vary in how they view their role in relation to supporting teachers and improving classroom instruction 5.Leaders benefit from cross-sector training and PLGs
