Study Plus Network Meeting 20 th November 2007 New targets Thinking about the literacy of numeracy in a mathematics unit Feedback / forum Tracking and monitoring pupil progress

Data update Autumn 2007

New Targets – Progress TARGETSKS3KS4 Progress (Achievement) % making 2 levels progress in En (from KS2) (30% / 46%) % making 2 levels progress in Ma (from KS2) (62% / 74%) % making 2 levels progress in En (from KS3) (56% / 71%) % making 2 levels progress in Ma (from KS3) (27% / 40%) Figures in brackets are National for 07 and Targets for 2011

Two Levels progress from KS3 – KS4 KS3 levelTwo levels gives GCSE grade 8A* (in maths) 7A (and A* in English) 6B 5C 4D 3E 2F Below level 2G

Progress targets – NEW Positives: Fits in with the move towards looking at progress as well as standards We need to stress this is about improving rates of progress within the school and not an expectation that all pupils will make 2 levels progress Issues: Two levels is ‘whole levels’ e.g any L4 to L6 What happens if pupils have no prior attainment? What happens if pupils join school mid key stage with no prior attainment?

New Targets – Attainment TARGETSKS3KS4 Threshold (standards attainment) % level 5+ in both En and Ma (67% / 74%) % level 5+ in Sci (no target for ICT) % 5 A*- C grades or equiv incl GCSE English and maths (46% / 53%) (no target for Sc / APS) Figures in brackets are National for 07 and Targets for 2011

Threshold targets – change of emphasis KS3: Proportion of 14 yr olds achieving level 5+ in both English and maths ENG 14 MA Is it possible to have high En, high Ma and yet low En and Ma? Say 80% eng and 80% maths? 60 20

Drop Dead Gorgeous Thinking about the literacy of numeracy Starter VocabularyResources none Discuss facial beauty. Which celebrities do you consider to be gorgeous? What makes them gorgeous? Note down your answers. What might be the issues surrounding this starter activity?

Drop Dead Gorgeous Issues Students off task – inappropriate language Groups not speaking Unstructured Dominant speakers Gender embarrassment Self esteem Inability to write

Drop Dead Gorgeous Solutions Statement cards Planned Groups e.g. Triads Talking Strategies e.g. counters Strict time limits

Drop Dead Gorgeous Statement cards All blondes are beautiful Big eyes are sexually appealing Wide apart eyes are unattractive Natural beauty is the best (no botox allowed!)

Drop Dead Gorgeous Show photographs of ten famous, ‘attractive’ people (IWB or printed off). We are going to rate them for their attractiveness, using a scale from 1 to 5. We need, though, to have descriptors for these scores so that we are consistent. Group the class into threes or fours to come up with five descriptors. Come together to agree on the final list. Publish the final list. Discuss with your partner what are the literacy demands are here

Drop Dead Gorgeous Potential Issues Vocabulary e.g. Consistent Groupings - Potentially a contentious subject Students who have limited language skills to engage with this activity Potential arguments to agree on the five statements SEAL

Drop Dead Gorgeous Solutions Vocabulary … Teach it e.g. Glossary, dictionary etc Groupings …Careful selection, know thy pupils Students who have limited language skills to engage with this activity … Sentence starters, statement cards again, explicit knowledge of visual literacy Potential arguments to agree on the five statements … Discreet guidance SEAL … Knowing thy pupils again

Reading Images Activity

Reading Images Activity – Suggested prompts What is your immediate response to this image? What do you know about this person? Does this person being famous automatically makes him / her attractive? In your view what facial features make this person attractive / unattractive On a scale of 1 to 5, what is his rating?

Drop Dead Gorgeous Look at the rest of this unit and consider the implications for explicit literacy teaching Suggest some solutions through working together
