Social Responsibility 101 Why systems professionals care Lesa Vold Director of Management Systems Presented: March 9-11, 2009 International ISO 9000 Conference

Social Responsibility (SR) What is it? The obligations and accountability assumed in carrying out actions or ideas in behalf of others.

Media’s Role The obligations and accountability assumed in carrying out actions… –Consumer assumptions are what create the general public opinion –Public opinion drives change –Majority of those assumptions are driven by media exposure

Media’s Role: Food Examples

Fill up an SUV’s tank with ethanol and you have used enough corn to feed a person for a year. The Economist, December 8th, 2007

FACTORY FARMS

Each slide probably brought a host of thoughts, feelings, emotions to you We have likely been exposed to information that drives our opinions As an industry, things can be done about ensuring practices that are socially responsible

Public Perception of SR

BUT who is creditable?

Fill the GAP… FULFILL THE OTHER ½ of the DEFINITION!!! …or ideas in behalf of others –We have the ability to fulfill this part of the definition –Corporations have already started to move in this direction

WHAT IS THE State of the Union?

SR Consistency Corporate definitions vary from place to place –Jan 2005 WG –ISO Guidance Doc – 2010 NOT CERTIFICATION DOCUMENT –Add value and not replace existing intergovernmental agreements Cultural Societal Environmental Legal Economic Conditions

Industry Impacts As company structures grow industry comes onboard Outline programs for the good of the whole that require: –Review of inputs and outputs –Definition of the scope of a project –Responsibilities regarding participation, etc. –Stakeholder involvement –Required Records –Setting of Metrics

Lets talk about projects… Carbon Footprints Energy Reduction Air Emissions Reductions Water Conservation Funding of Humanitarian Efforts Strengthening Communities Providing Health/Well Being Programs Safety Programs Employee Education Advancement Etc. Etc. Etc.

Where have we addressed the consistency with which we are moving forward with these new projects?

Educated Guessing… QMS PLAN Customer Focus Policy Objectives Responsibility Communication DO Management Review Resource Mgmt Training/Comp Infrastructure/Work Env Product Realization Production Provision Design & Development ID/Trace Control M&M CHECK Customer Sat Internal Audit M&M Process/product NCP Data ACT CA PA DOCUMENT Doc/Records/SOPs EMS PLAN Policy Aspects Legal Objectives/Targets/Programs Responsibility DO Resources Training/Comp Communication Operational Control Emergency Prep CHECK M & M Eval of Compliance NCP Internal Audits ACT Management Review DOCUMENT Docs/Records/SOPs SR PLAN Policy Legal Objectives/Programs Responsibility DO Resources Training/Comp Communication CHECK M & M Internal Audits ACT Management Review DOCUMENT Docs/Records/SOPs

Quality or Systems Professional What is your goal as a professional? What is your company’s goal for effective organization and efficiency? How different is a QMR and EMR and a SRMR? Get started early – it is just a re-definition of your customers…

What to do… Try to become part of a multifaceted group –Review of new initiatives –GAP analysis with old ones –Delegation of projects across areas –Realization of detrimental affects from one area to the next based on system’s approach to goals If no group –Understand other factors affecting your area –Act as a resource for other managers when cross relevant information appears

Be open to working with others in other “systems” areas –Gain ideas that you can use –Give ideas that they can use Strive for consistency in project approach Strive for job growth by focusing on “system” for improvement – not element of improvement
