Energy Terms Renewable Energy Energy sources that can be replaced, or replenished.

News Yesterday, scientists finished decoding the DNA of a Wooly Mammoth. Not used to make one with cloning, but instead used to understand how elephants have evolved.

News NASA is celebrating 10 years of the International Space Station. 167 visitors, from 15 countries. New Shuttles by 2010, retire the current ones! Obama

Energy Terms Hydroelectric- Electricity being made by hydro-water

Energy Terms Wood/Forests -Energy stored in trees in the carbon chemical bonds. Energy is old sunlight! Extra-(maple syrup)

Energy Terms Photovoltaic- Electricity being made by converting Sunlight/Visible Light. Solar Panels

Energy Terms Tidal Turbine- Energy production from the movement of ocean tides

Energy Terms Wave Turbine- Electricity produced by the movement of waves.

Energy Terms Bio-diesel- Fuel made from vegetables and grain

Energy Terms Wind Turbine- Electricity produced from the conversion of wind.

Energy Terms Non-Renewable Energy sources that once used, are non replaceable.

Energy Terms Fossil Fuels Ancient Stored Sunlight Coal, Oil, Natural Gas Considered the Catalyst for Accelerated Global Warming

Energy Terms Coal- Energy Source made of preserved swamp ecosystems. Water/Mud preserved. Largest world- wide energy source for producing electricity

Energy Terms Oil-Petroleum Naturally occurring liquid found in Earth, comprised of ancient Zooplankton and Algae, hydrocarbons(oceans)

Energy Terms Natural Gas -Source of energy from swamps, marshes and landfills. Ancient to recent. Bondies Island

Energy Terms Nuclear Power Plants -Energy produced by splitting atoms and using the heat to make steam and spin turbines

Energy Terms Unsure?! These energy sources have potential to be either renewable or non- renewable

Homework Hydrogen -Energy stored in the attractive bonds of Hydrogen gas. H 2 want to be in a water state.

Energy Term Conservation of energy- Law- Energy can neither be destroyed or created. All energy must be accounted for

Energy Terms Temperature- Average kinetic energy KE of the individual particle

Thermal Energy Total amount of Kinetic Energy from Particles. As Kinetic Energy of particles increases, so does the Thermal energy.(Heat Energy) The particles move faster.

Energy Transfer Heat- Movement of Thermal energy from a substance at a higher temperature to another at a lower temperature

Energy Transfer Conduction- Transfer of Thermal Energy, without particles moving. Transfer by touching, Direct Contact

Transfer of Energy Convection- The transfer of energy by movement of Fluids. Earths mantle as well as water in a pot on the stove.

Energy Transfer Radiation- Transfer of energy by or through EM Waves (Electromagnetic). Sun’s rays, hot lamps, tanning salon.

Transfer of Energy All three in action! Camp Fire! Lava Lamp!

Temperature Conversions Absolute WaterWater ZeroFreezesBoils F C – K

Phase Changes

Bell Work #1 How would you Describe a Solid? Packed together tightly in relatively fixed positions. Can Vibrate!

Bell Work #2 How would you Describe a Gas? Moving so fast that they do not stay close to one another. Expand to fill space!

Bell Work #3 How would you Describe a Liquid? Particles held together, but not so tightly that they can’t move past one another. No Shape, but Volume!

All 5 Phases

Solid, Liquid, Gas, Plasma All Based upon the Amount of KE

Energy Terms Insulator- Nature of material and it’s particles is resistant to absorbing Kinetic Energy

Energy Terms Conductor- Nature of material and it’s particles transfers Kinetic Energy Easily!
