SONY XEL-1 OLED TV Presentation By Bashir Ntwari

OLED TV Technology OLED TV (organic light emitting diode) is a new emerging flat panel technology. This new technology uses carbon based organic material in a process that converts electric energy into light. This light is then used to illuminate the screen and produce the most astounding results ever seen on a television. Its display screen is as thin as a coin because it doesn't require any use of backlight. The screens also consume less power than other competing display TV technologies such as the LCD display TV, it handle fast moving images better and offer good colour reproduction. Below shows the structure of an OLED. “I was surprised the first time I saw an organic (OLED) panel. It was barely even there, just 1 mm thin. I didn't sense the depth at all; images on TV just floated in the air. And the picture quality was impressive.”(H.Yokota, Oct 2007)

OLED TV History This was the first year the development of OLED technology started First demonstration of the kind of screens we know today took place in that year. The technique utilises organic compounds that generate light when they're fed with an electric current Kodak, Sanyo Show Full-Colour Active Matrix Organic Display; First Colour OLED Display Increases Threat to LCD Display Dominance Green Organic LED Shows High Efficiency Motorola Grants OLED Technology Rights To Universal Display And Takes Equity Position Sony Demonstrates a 13-Inch, Full-Colour OLED Prototype Sony Demonstrates a 24-Inch, Full-Colour OLED Prototype Sony introduces the first ever OLED TV, the XEL-1 at the CES in Las Vegas

SONY XEL-1 Sony introduced the first ever OLED TV officially in 2007, the XEL- 1. Its the first ever OLED TV to hit the market, but so far its only up for sale in Japan, and the U.S. Its an 11 inch TV Only 3mm thick (0.12 inch), this because pixel inside the OLED displays emit their own light so they don’t need additional light sources. Its has contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1, 960 x 450 resolution It has Low power consumption of 45w

Market Competition OLED TV (XEL-1)LCD/ Plasma TV Advantages OLED pixels can be turned on and off very quickly Better contrast than LCD/ Plasma TV. Lower energy consumption, and operating voltage. Much faster, fast motion and rapid eye movement.  Disadvantages It has taken the industry some time to develop panels large enough to be used in TVs Only available in one size. Not competent in the market because of only one fix price. Mass producing them costs a lot of money. Advantages They have longer life span continuous usage 0f 6years than OLED TV. Cheaper and Bigger size than the OLED TV. They have more panel longativity.  Disadvantages LCDs have a response time of around 10ms - a thousand times slower than a typical OLED pixel Higher energy consumption. Much slower, slower motion and rapid eye movement. The only major competition to the XEL-1 OLED TV, is the LCD, and PLASMA TV’s. This is because it’s the only OLED TV in the market. There will be future competition for Sony's XEL-1 OLED TV, as some rival companies such as TOSHIBA, SAMSUNG etc have shown they intentions in introducing bigger size OLED TV and have already shown they own prototypes.

Price: Why it cost more? OLED Display is becoming the fastest growing non-LCD display technology and has many several advantages to why it cost more compared to other Display technology like the LCD TV. The OLED display are 50% of the thickness and 70% of the weight and provide a 40% reduction of lower energy consumption and a 20% reduction of lower power consumption. This will be welcome by all type of consumers as they will save more money on power and energy. They visibility is much better than the other display TV as it can be viewed from all possible angles and from every direction with no colour shift and have a 10x faster switching speed to provide better improved moving image performance. They also provide a 40% bigger colour range resulting in stronger more clearer colours with a contrast of greater that 1,000,000:1 resulting in a vibrant display image with potential for millions of colours. Prices: US - $ in the US YEN - ¥ in Japan OLED technology also has some drawbacks, Its panel longevity less than a LCD TV. The organic compounds can degrade with use, especially those that emit blue light, this makes them not to be able to operate at full brightness for anywhere near as long as an LCD TV will. The addition of phosphorescent materials do improve OLED longevity, but still not up to LCD levels. It has also taken the SONY some time to develop panels large enough to be used in TVs the world's. The Sony's XEL-1, is only 11in across, this is though to appear as much because OLED screen production hasn't evolved as far as LCD has. This could affect the cost of the product as consumer are now demanding large panel TVs, this could be the weakness of OLED TV in the market competition.

Environmental Factor Energy and power Consumption/ Recycling The XEL-1 OLED TV reduces energy consumption by 40%. Its more energy efficient than a 40 inch LCD TV. This factor show the impact it has on the high price of the XEL-1 OLED TV compared to the LCD TV. It also has a lower power consumption of, as it doesn't require a separate light source because of its light emitting structure, this means it can be powered using very low voltage. This is another reason why the OLED TV price is higher than other display devices as consumers are looking for display device that consume extremely low levels of power and energy. It has a low power consumption of 45W, less power than an light bulb. Its easier to recycle, because it uses less resources to make the product, this is a sign that in the near future the product price will be reduced as the company will be spending less on production of the electronic and fresh raw materials.

Environmental Factors Eco-friendly The OLED TV is made using bio plastic material, this TV is a friend. It also doesn’t need need a backlight because the images from the OLED TV comes from the organic materials in the screen, so less material is needed to make the TV. OLED TV uses less energy that is needed to show images on the screen. It can also prevent light emission, which makes it eye friendly to the consumers.

Impact and Benefits The have an enormous energy saving for the society. Environmental impact that are associated with the reduction of the need of electricity, less air pollution decrease of non renewable sources of energy, less greenhouse effect. Better quality of display improved Creates new OLED industry, that will be beneficial to improve and produce OLED materials and devices structure.

Conclusion My conclusion is that from 2011 the more dominant television display technologies will be those based on low cost but high precision manufacture capable of providing very high resolution, low energy/ power consumption, bright images and low overheads in material re cycling. The OLED Display technology has many of these features but will be looking to reduce the price of its product as more consumers embraces the technology. Its construction characteristics are similar to those of LCD. Then the transition from LCD to the potentially totally dominant OLED display technology is likely to have a relatively low impact on material use. The effect on energy use is considered to be much more significant through a step reduction in energy requirement both for in use of primary TV and for display production.
