Grenada Conference of S.D.A. Stewardship Department Stewardship of Body [Temple] Created by Oliver Scott

Stewardship of Body [Temple] The Christian does not simply has a body but his body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. It is God’s desire that His Spirit dwells in everybody. Created by Oliver Scott

1 Corinthians 6:19 – “ What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost [which is] in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? ” Created by Oliver Scott

We must manage our body temples in ways that will glorify God. 1 Corinthians 10:31 – “ Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” Created by Oliver Scott

A temple is used to worship and glorify God. We were made to glorify God. Created by Oliver Scott

Revelation 4:11 – “ Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” Created by Oliver Scott

Isaiah 43:7 – “ [Even] every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.” Created by Oliver Scott

Health 3 John verse 2 – “ Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” Created by Oliver Scott

The best body to glorify God is a healthy body temple rather than an unhealthy one. Stewardship of body temple involves taking good care of your health. Created by Oliver Scott

The Body Temple is to Be Sexually Pure We must be sexually pure 1 Corinthians 6:15-20 – 15 “ Know ye not that your bodies are the members of Christ? shall I then take the members of Christ, and make [them] the members of an harlot? God forbid. 16 What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh. … Created by Oliver Scott

“… 17 But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit. 18 Flee fornication. Every sin that a man doeth is without the body; but he that committeth fornication sinneth against his own body. 19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost [which is] in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's.” Created by Oliver Scott

The Appearance of The Temple Just as the appearance of the temple should reflect the holiness and glory of the God who dwells and is worshipped there, so too our appearance should reflect the holiness and glory of God. Created by Oliver Scott

Dress, The Bible and The Body Temple After sin God gave man clothing to cover his nakedness Genesis 3:21 – “ Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.” Created by Oliver Scott

Hosea 2:9 – “ Therefore will I return, and take away my corn in the time thereof, and my wine in the season thereof, and will recover my wool and my flax [given] to cover her nakedness.” Created by Oliver Scott

Nakedness in a biblical context relates to the absence of clothing or the lack of clothing. It is God’s will that after the fall, man is to be properly covered. Created by Oliver Scott

Nakedness, Shame and Sexual Immorality In the Bible there is a relationship between nakedness, shame and sexual immorality. Exodus 32:25 – “ And when Moses saw that the people [were] naked; (for Aaron had made them naked unto [their] shame among their enemies:) ” Created by Oliver Scott

Exodus 32:6 – “ And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and to drink, and rose up to play.” Created by Oliver Scott

The word “play” used in the text refers to sexual orgies. These sexual orgies were performed by pagans in their religious festivities. Created by Oliver Scott

The Israelites were lacking of clothing to their shame and were involved in sexual orgies. Proper clothing is a safeguard against shame, sexual temptation and sin. Created by Oliver Scott

Could you imagine the absence of clothing in a sinful world ? God in His wisdom has given human beings clothing to cover their nakedness. Created by Oliver Scott

God has also given human beings a sense of shame after the fall when his nakedness is exposed or when he is discovered lacking of proper covering. Before the fall Adam and Eve were without shame. After the fall they proceeded to cover their nakedness because of shame. Created by Oliver Scott

There is also a deeper spiritual significance to this … However, many are losing their sense of shame. Have you lost your sense of shame ? Are you losing your sense of shame ? Do you still have a sense of shame ? Created by Oliver Scott

To lose the sense of shame when one’s nakedness is exposed or when seen lacking clothing in itself is a “shame”. Created by Oliver Scott

1 Timothy 2:9 – “ In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; ” Created by Oliver Scott

Paul speaks in this text in relation to Christian women. The word modest as used in the KJV comes from a Latin translation of the Greek. This Latin word is modestus, which means “of due measure.” In other words of right or proper measure. Created by Oliver Scott

In Paul’s day there was among the Christian sisters a problem of over dressing, undue measure and extravagance in dress. Created by Oliver Scott

In some pagan cultures there is the direct opposite of extravagance. Paul encouraged Christian women to be well balanced in their dress. Due measure. A proper and relevant application of the text would mean that Christian women must avoid extravagance in dress and the lack of proper covering. Created by Oliver Scott

“ With shamefacedness ” Shamefacedness has to do with having that God given sense of shame. It is a positive self-respect, self-regard, self-consciousness, pride and dignity. Created by Oliver Scott

The text sends the message that the Christian woman must cover her body temple with self-respect and as one having a sense of shame. Therefore being exposed with a lack of clothing is not proper for the Christian woman. Created by Oliver Scott

“ And sobriety ” Sobriety has to do with soberness. Soberness of thinking and good judgement must influence the dress of Christian women. Created by Oliver Scott

2 Timothy 1:7 – “ For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” “ And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.” Mark 5:15 – “ And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.” Created by Oliver Scott

People in their right minds should be properly covered. “ Not with broided hair or gold or pearls or costly array ” Created by Oliver Scott

Paul is admonishing Christian women to refrain from extravagant hair-styles, ornamental jewellery and expensive clothing on their body temple. The principle of simplicity in hair-styles could also be applied to males. Created by Oliver Scott

Note that the word modest in the text only apply to clothing. This is because the wearing of clothing on the body temple is needful. Paul encourages the sisters to wear modest clothing, with shamefacedness and sobriety. Created by Oliver Scott

When it comes to the rest of the verse Paul is not saying that these things should be done. Paul says “ not with.” Created by Oliver Scott

In other words the body temple of the Christian woman is to be dressed with modest clothing, a sense of shame and good judgement but not with extravagant hair- styles, ornamental jewellery and expensive clothing. Created by Oliver Scott

Paul is not advocating for the wearing of modest jewellery but he is saying not with jewellery. Modest describes the clothing to be worn on the body temple but does not describe jewellery. Created by Oliver Scott

In proper stewardship of body temple, the body temple is not to be with extravagant hair-styles or gold or pearls or expensive clothing. Created by Oliver Scott

There is a connection between extravagant clothing and expensive clothing. One must be economically wise in the purchase of clothing. This is good stewardship. Created by Oliver Scott

Cosmetics The principles of modesty and absence of extravagance as gleaned from Paul in 1 Timothy 2:9 can be applied to the issue of cosmetics. Created by Oliver Scott

“ We should avoid the use of cosmetics not in keeping with good taste and the principles of Christian modesty.” SDA Church Manual, Revised 2015, 19 th Edition, page 147. Created by Oliver Scott

2 Kings 9:30 – “ And when Jehu was come to Jezreel, Jezebel heard [of it]; and she painted her face, and tired her head, and looked out at a window.” Created by Oliver Scott

Ezekiel 23:38-40,44 – 38 “ Moreover this they have done unto me: they have defiled my sanctuary in the same day, and have profaned my sabbaths. 39 For when they had slain their children to their idols, then they came the same day into my sanctuary to profane it; and, lo, thus have they done in the midst of mine house. … Created by Oliver Scott

40 “… And furthermore, that ye have sent for men to come from far, unto whom a messenger [was] sent; and, lo, they came: for whom thou didst wash thyself, paintedst thy eyes, and deckedst thyself with ornaments, 44 Yet they went in unto her, as they go in unto a woman that playeth the harlot: so went they in unto Aholah and unto Aholibah, the lewd women.” Created by Oliver Scott

Note the connection with the sins of the chapter [idolatry, defilement of the temple, Sabbath breaking and harlotry]. Created by Oliver Scott

In bible times painting around the eyes was used for aesthetics and attraction. It was done in connection with the use of ornamental jewellery as seen in Ezekiel 23:40. Created by Oliver Scott

Jeremiah 4:30 – “ And [when] thou [art] spoiled, what wilt thou do? Though thou clothest thyself with crimson, though thou deckest thee with ornaments of gold, though thou rentest thy face with painting, in vain shalt thou make thyself fair; [thy] lovers will despise thee, they will seek thy life.” Created by Oliver Scott
