October 15 or 16, 2016 Today’s Agenda: 1)Quiz on the reading and on Parts of Speech (10 minutes) 2)Review previous quizzes on Night (5 minutes) 3)Lesson on subject and predicate (20 minutes) 4)Lesson on sentence types (20 minutes) 5)Cut out butterflies (10 minutes) 6)Reading/writing time

Quiz on Night and Parts of Speech 1)Outline four events that stuck out in your mind from the reading assignment to p. 85. If you’ve read ahead, indicate so and write four events that stuck out from what you read.

Quiz (continued) 2) Identify each underlined word as a noun, pronoun, verb, adjective, adverb or conjunction. Write the word and then give the part of speech. Example: I=Pronoun “I wanted to come back to Sighet to tell you the story of my death so that you could prepare yourselves while there was still time. To live? I don't attach any importance to my life any more. I'm alone. No, I wanted to come back, and to warn you and see how it is. No one will listen to me” (Weisel 7).

Now 1)Pass your quizzes forward. 2)I need three volunteers. Let’s go over the last quizzes. 3) Now pass back the graded quizzes.

Subject and predicate How many of you have ever heard of subject and predicate (discuss with a neighbor or as a class)? Can you define subject and predicate? Well, this might help:

Given the video Define each: A subject in a sentence is: The noun doing the action. The predicate in a sentence is: The action.

Practice by identifying the subject and the predicate in each of these sentences: 1)That car runs like junk. 2)I wish I had myself a good friend. 3)Have you ever been told not to talk when it was really important that you had to talk? (Tricky, tricky). ****Now get with a neighbor and write three more sentences and identify the subjects and predicates of each!

Your examples The nurse killed the child. Stacey can only drink green poison in the mornings. My dad fell up the stairs. I like to steal candy from kids on Halloween. The safe killed the dog. Jack ate the cat alive.

Sentence Types Can you define each of these? Simple sentence Compound Sentence

Sentence Types Defined A simple sentence is a sentence with one independent clause. This means it is one complete sentence with no extra baggage. A compound sentence contains two or more independent clauses. This means that you could find two or more sentences in it, but they are separated by a conjunction. We’ll cover complex sentences later…

Here are some examples Simple- I love poetry. Compound- I love poetry, but my students are not too sure about it.

Rules simplified 1)Simple sentences only have a subject and a predicate. 2)Compound sentences will have a comma and/or a conjunction in the middle of two independent clauses.

Your examples I like books although movies are better. We were having fun until the cops showed up. I like to drink water while I run around the tree. It was raining even though I didn’t get wet. I will stab Joe if you feed me tacos. I like deer hunting even thoughI like duck hunting.
