College Internationalisation “A leading University must deliver a significant volume of research of international importance and must have a strong international research profile.” Build relationships with international industry and academia. International excellence through established means e.g. EU H2020, EU ERC, prestigious projects with overseas government and industry… Develop income stream resulting in high quality output and impact suitable for REF 2020 Build esteem and deliver quality and impact 4

CIL’s remit Facilitate international collaboration at all levels; inward and outward: UG, PGT, PGR and Staff e.g. Student exchanges, mobility, IPDF… Geographical Region: Everywhere except those covered by Deans for UGS (Trevor Hoey) and UoG-UESTC (John Marsh) 6

Funding to initiate research collaboration: International Partnership Development Fund Mobility Schemes IPDF 60% with strategic partners, 40% non-strategic partners Used for: Collaborative Programme Development Establishing international research collaboration Follow up funding for partnership projects Sustainability of the partnership essential Must be supported by the College Generally up to a maximum of £5k (50% from College and University) Only funding for Strategic Partners remains 7

Funding Mobility Schemes: Principal’s Early Career Mobility Scheme (Closed for 2015/16) Open to PhD students and Post-doctoral Researchers from Glasgow Visit/Research: Columbia University, University of Hong Kong and McGill University Staff Mobility Funding estaffmobilityprogramme,funding Erasmus+ International Credit Mobility Scholarships available to support 2 staff exchanges with the University of Adelaide in the fields of Science (incl. Life Sciences), Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. 8

Examples of External Funding for Internationalisation Newton Fund: 16 countries, £375M, Calls open 18 th April and 11 th July “It aims to strengthen science and innovation capacity and unlock further funding to support poverty alleviation.” Brazil, Chile, China, Colombia, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Mexico, Philippines, South Africa and wider Africa, Thailand, Turkey, Vietnam (Official Development Assistance) Individual calls e.g. Innovate and GITA, UK and India (deadline 20 th April); EPSRC and MEXT, Japan) European Union (Joe Galloway) 9
