The Health System in Norway Student Counselling Centre Autumn 2011

The Health System in Norway  Health check  Medical insurance  Norwegian National Health Scheme  Where to get medical assistance  Health related services

Compulsory Health Check  Students from countries other than the EU/EEA, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and Japan must undergo a TB test and chest X-ray upon arrival in Norway  You will receive a letter in the mail  You are not allowed to study without undergoing the check

Medical insurance  EU/EEA students here for 3-12 months should have valid National Health Card, E-111 or E-128 or from home  Citizens of the United Kingdom are also covered by showing their British Passport

Medical Insurance  All students here for more than 12 months will automatically be registered with the Norwegian National Health Scheme once the student registers at the Population Registry

Medical insurance  Students studying here for 3-12 months who are not covered by health insurance from home are eligible to apply for voluntary membership in the Norwegian National Health Scheme

Medical Insurance  Students here for up to 3 months must have Health Insurance from home  If you have private insurance – you will have to pay full fee up front and be reimbursed by your insurance company later

Norwegian National Health Scheme  Norway has a user fee system  General Consultations cost NOK  Maximum annual fee is NOK 1880,- if a member of NNHS  A Free Card will automatically be issued and sent to you when the maximum fee is reached, but as a safety precaution, keep all receipts!

What is not covered?  Medicine – generally covered by the patient. Medicine for chronic conditions is either heavily subsidised or free  Spectacles or regular eye exams  Dental care  Very expensive  SWO’s Student Health Fund may give you a partial refund if very high expenses

Need medical assistance?  How long are you going to stay in Tromsø?  One semester or less? 2 options: 1.Emergency clinic on Campus 2.Any Medical Clinic: no.html no.html no.html  2 semesters or more?  Personal Doctor (after obtaining Norwegian ID)  Come to the Student Counselling Centre for help

General Consultations  If you are assigned a doctor, you should call his or her clinic to arrange an appointment  If you are assigned a doctor and have forgotten who it is, or you want to change doctor, please go to: or contact the Student Counselling Centre

Personal Doctor (GP)  Students registered with NNHS who are here for longer than 6 months, will be invited to sign up with a personal doctor by Helfo.  Complicated process: 1.Norwegian ID Number 2.MinID online application for pin codes 3.Sign up for a GP

Urgency/Emergency Consultations  All of the clinics hold open a certain number of emergency appointments  Call your general practitioner’s clinic when it first opens in the morning (usually 08:30) to arrange one of these appointments

Emergency Medical Clinic Legevakta  For students who haven’t been assigned a personal doctor yet, but a more expensive alternative than regular medical clinics  For everyone in Tromsø outside of regular medical clinic hours (4pm-8am. Mon-Fri, weekends, and holidays  Located at UNN (University hospital), phone number

Emergency Medical Clinic Legevakta  Drop-in system – not necessary to call  If necessary, take a taxi. Any fare over NOK 95 may be reimbursed by the Social Security Office, NAV Office. Keep the receipt.  Ambulance: 113

Student Health Clinic  Location: The Centre for Social Medicine (down town, building next to driv)  Office hours:  Monday-Friday 11am-2:30pm (appointment)  Tuesdays 2pm-5pm (drop-in)  Contact phone:

Student Health Clinic  Team including medical personnel  Assist with questions regarding sexuality, sexually transmitted diseases, contraception, pregnancy, etc.  Free testing, counselling and therapy  Pregnancy tests are also available  Confidential and free of charge. Students may drop in or make an appointment.  Free contraceptives
