Atmospheric Holiness – Part 2: Freedom Acts 2:14-41

Most of book of Acts is descriptive. We have to work to find the prescriptive parts.

An introduction to the message Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning!

An introduction to the message Peter begins by defending the behavior of the apostles against the accusations of the crowd. Some, however, made fun of them and said, "They have had too much wine.“ - Acts 2:13

An introduction to the message Peter uses the Bible to defend the behavior of the apostles. No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: " 'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.

An introduction to the message Peter uses the Bible to defend the behavior of the apostles. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

An introduction to the message Peter uses the Bible to defend the behavior of the apostles. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.

An introduction to the message Peter uses the Bible to defend the behavior of the apostles. I will show wonders in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood and fire and billows of smoke.

An introduction to the message Peter uses the Bible to defend the behavior of the apostles. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.

An introduction to the message Peter uses the Bible to defend the behavior of the apostles. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'

An introduction to the message The early church believed in the divine inspiration of Scripture because what Joel said is what God says. What God said would happen has happened just like He said.

An introduction to the message The attack begins with mocking, then proceeds to questioning (Acts 4:7); to threats, (4:17); to imprisonment, (Acts 5:18); to physical blows,( 5:40); to slaughter, (Acts 7:58).

The Message in a Sentence "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." The first main point of the message is this: Jesus is Lord and Christ.

The Message in a Sentence Jesus the Lord and Christ was indeed the Messiah they had been waiting for but they failed to recognize Him by His works.

The Message in a Sentence "Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him, as you yourselves know. – Acts 2:22

The Message in a Sentence The wicked men had a participated in God’s plan but were not predestined by God to be wicked.

The Message in a Sentence This man was handed over to you by God's set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to death by nailing him to the cross. – Acts 2:23

The Message in a Sentence It was an act of God that established Jesus as the Lord and Christ. But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. – Acts 2:24

The Message in a Sentence The O.T. prophesied Jesus would be the Lord and Christ. David said about him: " 'I saw the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

The Message in a Sentence The O.T. prophesied Jesus would be the Lord and Christ. Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will live in hope, because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy One see decay.

The Message in a Sentence The O.T. prophesied Jesus would be the Lord and Christ. You have made known to me the paths of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence.'

The Message in a Sentence The O.T. prophesied Jesus would be the Lord and Christ. "Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day.

The Message in a Sentence The O.T. prophesied Jesus would be the Lord and Christ. But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne.

The Message in a Sentence The O.T. prophesied Jesus would be the Lord and Christ. Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay.

The Message in a Sentence The O.T. prophesied Jesus would be the Lord and Christ. God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses of the fact. Exalted to the right hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear.

The Message in a Sentence The O.T. prophesied Jesus would be the Lord and Christ. For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said, " 'The Lord said to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet." '

The Message in a Sentence His status as Lord and Christ is not dependent on our response to Him.

The second major point of this message is that: We are guilty "Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." - v.36

The second major point of this message is that: We are guilty The reality of a Jesus centered message is effective. When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" – v.37

The second major point of this message is that: We are guilty Literally: they had sharp pains because of their anxiety and remorse.

The Bottom Line of Peters Message Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off—for all whom the Lord our God will call."

The Bottom Line of Peters Message Repentance is the way out. Repentance is a gift from God. Repentance is our only hope when confronted with the condemnation of the cross. A God given repentance leads to baptism.

The Bottom Line of Peters Message Our witness can not be separated from our faith. The gift of repentance is give to everyone. Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Bottom Line: A church creates an environment in which God’s grace is released in atmospheric holiness when it chooses to preach the gospel message because it is the hope that transforms lives.

Bottom Line: Biblical teaching that transforms… All people matter… (as in all…broken, whole, healing, searching, etc.)
