The Sacrament of Baptism Unit Three Religion 9A

What is a Sacrament? A visible sign of invisible grace.

The Purpose of a Sacrament 1)Sanctify (make holy) 2)Build up the Body of Christ (the Church) 3)Worship God The Sacraments both express and strengthen our faith.

7 Sacraments, 3 Types Sacraments of Initiation: lay the foundation of Christian Life and draw us more deeply into the life of the Church and the community. 1) Baptism

Sacraments of Initiation Confirmation

Sacraments of Initiation Eucharist: A sacrament every Sunday! We are born anew by Baptism, strengthened by Confirmation, and receive in the Eucharist the food of eternal life.

Sacraments of Healing Reconciliation Anointing of the Sick

Sacraments of Service Marriage Holy Orders

Each Sacrament has: A Ritual or Rite that must be followed in order for the sacrament to be considered valid. The Rite includes symbols that are used as a part of the liturgy that connect to the meaning of the ritual. They also result in ‘ongoing effects’ - or what we can expect from participating in the sacrament.

Sacraments of Initiation Sacraments of Initiation: 1. lay the foundation of Christian Life 2. draw us more deeply into the Body of Christ (the Church) and the Community of Believers. What types of initiation have you experienced?

Baptism Baptism is a Sacrament of Initiation The word Baptism comes from a Greek word (baptizein) meaning, “to plunge” or “immerse” into water.

History of Baptism Scripture refers to baptism Matthew 3: 17 “And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And then a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.” John 3:5 Jesus said: “No one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit.”

The History of Baptism - Pentecost Acts Chapter 2: “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” From her earliest moment in history, the Church baptized.

History of Baptism: Adults Infant Baptism was not usual; early communities baptized adults. Christianity was “illegal” in many places and dangerous to practice. Catechumens required a sponsor to testify for them. Were not admitted to the church until a year or more of study. 313 – legalization of Christianity led to infant baptism.

Celebration and Meaning 1.Initiation: You become part of the Christian community. 2.Forgiveness of sins: - Baptism washes away our Original and Personal sin. - Original sin is the condition we are born into that make us choose our own way, not God’s way. - Baptism allows us to be covered by the sacrifice of Jesus’ death on the cross. 3. Share in the identity of Christ as prophet, priest, and king. 4. Participation in the Paschal Mystery - We die with Christ (in the water we die to our old selves) - We rise with Christ in New life.

Rite of Baptism – Reception of Children What name do you give this child? What do you ask of God’s church for your children ? Parents accept responsibility of training them in the practice of faith. Sponsors agree to assist parents in their responsibility. Children are marked with the Sign of the Cross.

Rite of Baptism – Celebration of God’s Word Scripture Prayers of the Faithful Litany of the Saints Prayer of Exorcism/ Anointing

Rite of Baptism: The Liturgy of Baptism Blessing of Water

What were one or two of the events in the Bible mentioned during the prayer of blessing of water? What are some uses of water? What does water represent?

Baptismal Promises: I believe! P ROFESSION OF F AITH Do you believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth? Elect: I do. Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, suffered death was buried, rose again from the dead, and is seated at the right hand of the Father? Elect: I do. Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting? Elect: I do.

Baptism: Consent Is it your will that your child should be baptized in the faith of the Church, which we have professed with you? I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. (Triple Immersion!)

Anointing with Chrism God now anoints you with the Chrism of salvation. As Christ was anointed Priest, Prophet, and King, so may you live always as members of his body, sharing everlasting life.

Ongoing Effects of Baptism Seals us with an indelible mark of belonging to Christ. This becomes part of us, we cannot erase or “undo” our baptism. Baptism can only be received once – we never re-baptize. Baptism enables and commits us to serve God by: 1. Participating in Liturgy (our priestly ministry) 2. Living a life of holiness/sharing the Good news (prophet) 3. Serving others (king)
