Westside Community Schools Pre-Algebra Parent Meeting April 19, 2016

Welcome To Pre-Algebra Teachers: Lynn Spady and Katie Sindt Khan Academy during 4 th quarter this spring Parent/teacher communication through Remind Coursework and homework will be posted on Pre- Algebra wiki Blended approach to Pre-Algebra for

Blended Learning Incorporates a combination of face-to-face instruction and online learning. Puts more of the responsibility for learning on the student. Has been used in Westside for years, we just haven’t called it that. Gives the the learner voice and choice in how they learn, when they learn, and the pace at which they learn. 3

Qualification process Based on the philosophy of multiple measures, Westside has combined the most predictive measures into a comprehensive process: SAT 10 of 95 th Percentile and above qualifies the student to take the Orleans Hanna. Orleans Hanna local percentile of 61 qualifies the student to take a test aligned to Westside’s standards. A score of 40 correct or better on the local CRT gains the student entrance into 6 th grade pre- algebra. 4

If Honors Pre-Algebra is successfully completed in 6th grade, the middle school math course sequence is:

Honors Pre-Algebra  Integers and Algebraic Expressions  Equations and Inequalities  Graphing Linear Equations  Transformations  Operations with Rational Numbers  Applications of Proportions  Applications of Percents  Exponents and Power Rules  Geometry  Using Graphs to Analyze Data  Probability

Mathematics Course Sequence Westside High School

If Honors Geometry is successfully completed in 8th grade, the high school math course sequence is:

If Algebra I is successfully completed in 8th grade, the high school math course sequence is:

Algebra is the foundation for ALL high school mathematics courses. o High school courses MUST be passed with a B or higher to be eligible for the next honors course. o Looking into the future - college requirements. What does your child need to have for college math requirements? o Does your child really need to take Calculus as a junior in high school? o Is your child likely to pursue a mathematics related field?
