Electricity Distribution Co. EDCO Eng. Hamzeh Alfaqeeh Head of meters section 1

EDCO area The Electricity Distribution Company (EDCO) is responsible for running the electricity distribution system up to 33KV level, mainly in the southern and eastern rural part of Jordan. The concession area of EDCO is divided into (6) separate districts: Jordan Valley, Karak, Tafila, Maan, Aqaba and Eastern area. Shown in the following figure 2

Supply Areas of EDCO 3

AMI & AMR PIOLT PROJECTs EDCO had executed a several AMR and AMI projects using power line carrier, fiber optics, and GPRS. AMR/AMI systems with three pilot projects: 1- GPRS: (ISKRA, Hexing). 2- Optical fiber( ISKRA with LS’s MDM system). 3- PLC : (ISKRA meters) 5

1. AMI Pilot Project, Hexing Meters The Modem is GPRS The name of MDM system is G3. MDM system can read all registers in meters. Numbers of meters 607 meters (single phase and three phase) The metering technology used is including disconnectors for single phase and three- phase customers. DLMS protocols. 6

1. AMI Pilot Project, Hexing Meters The Management Data Meter system includes Web service Current limitation. Internal antenna EDCO and Hexing are working to migrate the meter readings into the billing system automatically. Total cost $. OPEX cost is 2 $ for every meters per month. 7

1. AMI Pilot Project, Hexing Meters The problems: A. The communications network is weak in some site. B. Data size “ heart pulse”. C. Billing system. The pilot can be evaluated with 85% successfully operated. 8

2. AMR Pilot, ISKRA meters EDCO has install CT rated AMR meters on 180 customers by Iskra meters using GPRS for huge customers “ 50,000 KWHr & above” MDM system is SEP2W. The MDM reads six registers only. External Antenna. 2G Modem. Cost : € OPEX : 2$ for every meter per month. 9

2. AMR Pilot, ISKRA meters Problems: A. communications networks’ weakness. B. MDM registers limitations. C. Web-service. D. Billing System Interface E. External Antenna. 10

GPRS Disadvantage pilot project Lack of coverage for communication network. Less reliability. Monthly operating costs high cost. Lack of data Size to provide MDM system: Lack of information meters. 11

3. Disi Project “AMR System” Disi project is one of huge projects overall of Jordan recently. 56 pump substations (33/3.3KV) plus main pump substation (33/11KV). 17 GWhr monthly consumption 58 three phase CT/VT meters. Ethernet via F.O communication. Cost =138,000 JD 12

3. Disi Project “AMR System” EDCO used Iskra meters and Ethernet over fiber optic cables with the intended objective being to automate the monthly readings of high consumption loads spread over a large geographic area. The communications protocol used by Iskra is handled by the MDMS by LS. MDM system can reads all registers and load profile. MDM system can interface with billing system 13

Ethernet by Optical Fiber Advantages Reliability Fast but, Expensive 14

4. PLC Pilot project, ISKRA Meters EDCO had a smart metering program that involved 307 PLC meters using Iskra. EDCO found that the PLC technology used by Iskra in 2008 PLC was not a reliable technology. Where the problems in signals weakness and readings missings can’t be solved due to EDCO network. 15

4. PLC Disadvantage in pilot project Noise reliability. speed Failuer 16

Future Projects Pilot project for SMART meter: - It is a result of TETRA-Tech consultancy service. - EDCO proposed to EMRC conducting the pilot project in Aqaba districts area with number of consumers around (40000). - Its anticipated to change proposal to be for the distribution substation and for large consumers (No. around 10000). 18
