Cold Jet VMWare Consolidation Ben Snowden
Agenda Problems Project Description and Use Deliverables Demonstration Conclusion
Problems Cold Jet’s current infrastructure has several problems Heat Average server room temp is 100F. Ideal temp is 70F Lack of rack space No more space to add new servers Business Continuity Currently only data is backed up, not entire system Inefficiency Current servers only use a fraction of their capacity
Project Description and Use Consolidate the number of servers using VMware Virtual Infrastructure 3 Installation and configuration of SAN Install VI3 Migrate physical servers
Deliverables Senior Design III Complete installation of VI3 Migrate remaining servers Implement backup strategy Document infrastructure
Rack Space Removed six servers from the rack adding 12U’s of available space. 2U’s available before the consolidation
Heat Server room temperature reduced by 18 degrees, doubling the life of the components
Inefficiency VMWare Dynamic Resource Scheduler automatically distributes the load of virtual machines among all servers
Business Continuity Maintenance mode allows a server to be shutdown without affecting the running virtual machines
Business Continuity VMWare HA automatically restarts virtual machines on an operational server in the event of a failure
Business Continuity VCB allows for easy backup of an entire virtual machine. Can be restored on any ESX server.
More Agile Virtual machines can be provisioned from templates with a matter of minutes
Conclusion Cold Jet’s overheating and rack space problems solved by removing six servers Cold Jet’s inefficiency problem solved by DRS Cold Jet’s business continuity problem solved by maintenance mode, HA, and VCB
