What are indoor positioning systems? An indoor positioning system (IPS) is a network of devices used to wirelessly locate objects or people inside a building. Like GPS for the indoors

Wi-Fi based positioning Trilateration not accurate enough due to interference with Wi-Fi signals Fingerprinting Training phase – build a radiomap of observed frequencies of known locations Real phase – match received signal to radiomap to determine location Combination with inertial systems

Future of Indoor Mapping Indoor location technology market will be ~ 5 billion by 2018 Accuracy should improve with more research and more data being gathered by smartphones

Conclusion Indoor positioning systems are a growing industry/technology that have the power to improve many aspects of our day to day lives There are challenges to implementing these systems, but solutions are being found to develop accuracy and reliability
